10th Annual Tokeland/North Cove Artist Studio Tour

The Tenth Annual Tokeland/North Cove Artist Studio Tour was held on Saturday, April 16. The local resident artists of Tokeland opened their studios to the public in order to showcase their works. Additional artists traveled to Tokeland and were on display at the Historic Tokeland Hotel as well as the Shoalwater Bay Tribal Center.

11th National Drug Take Back

Teen Advocacy Coalition (TAC) and Pioneer Grocery are sponsoring the 11th National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, being held Saturday, April 30, 2016, drop off between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm at Pioneer Grocery, located at W 1st and Willapa, South Bend, WA. With support from the Drug Enforcement Administration and local law enforcement, TAC will be staffing the drop location, collecting all unwanted & expired medications. Take a look in your cabinets to see if you have anything that could be a risk to you and your family. We want to keep these materials out of the reach of children and teenagers, encouraging the responsible discarding of these substances.

CDBG Grant for Fliess Creek Approved

The South Bend City Council met on Monday, April 25 for their regular city council meeting. Mayor Struck started the meeting as usual by approving the current meeting's agenda as well as the minutes from the previous meeting. For the first item the council opened a public hearing for a CDBG Grant Program for Fliess Creek. The CDBG Grant Program is a grant for up to $750,000.

The Washington Coastsavers conducted a cleanup on Saturday, April 23 at multiple beaches around Gray Harbor County. For results from the 2016 cleanups, and the 2016 Coastsaver of the year, look to the next issue of the Willapa Harbor Herald.

Conviction reinstated of man who shot Johnson

The Washington State Supreme Court on April 21 reinstated the attempted murder conviction of a Pacific County man who shot a Washington State Patrol trooper in the head in February 2010.

Martin A. Jones shot then-Trooper Scott Johnson at point-blank range while Johnson was impounding a van belonging to Jones' wife, who had been arrested on suspicion of drunken driving. Johnson, remarkably, survived and recovered, and currently serves as Pacific County Sheriff.

Everybody's store locations slated to re-brand to "Thriftway"

The Everybody's supermarkets in Raymond and Elma are slated to be re-branded to Thriftway in a Grand Opening on May 4. Franchise Owner Matt Marcott acquired the Everybody's Supermarkets from Jake Myers in November of 2015. It's been six months since the brand has changed hands, and Marcott spoke to what it has been like running the new store locations, "The new ownership has gone well; we hired when we came in but every single person kind of ended up transitioning with us and so it was a smooth transition. At this point we have concentrated on item selection, we've brought in a lot of new items to the store, both conventional and natural," said Marcott.

Old School Barber Shop in Downtown

The Broadside Barber Shop has been in downtown Raymond since January of 2016 and is currently open from Friday through Sunday, from 10am to 6pm. Jacob Sullivan the owner, is originally from Portland. Sullivan comes from a background of sales and left a job cutting hair in Portland to move his business to Raymond. "I moved into this building in January of 2016, it took us a little bit to find a place here, no locations were available and there were only a few places that are even for rent," said Sullivan.

South Bend attorneys Betsy and Joel Penoyar wait for their soup servings coming from volunteer Barbara Bennett at the April 15 SAVE KPLU fundraiser in Raymond. Others in the background include customer Adelle Hougan and volunteers Jeff and Christine Ferguson, Jan Norman (back turned to camera) and Patricia Neve. The supper, held at Elks Lodge #1292, featured seven varieties of soup plus salad, bread and cupcakes. It was followed by a jazz concert across the street at the Raymond Theatre featuring an Aberdeen band, The Dukes of Swing, who donated their services for the event. More than $2,500 was raised through the two events.

Shadday sentenced for child molestation

Joshua Marvin Shadday, of Chinook, entered a guilty pleas to two counts of first degree child molestation in Pacific County Superior Court last Thursday.

Two young boys disclosed to their mother that her live-in boyfriend of several years (Shadday) had inappropriately touched them. According to authorities account, when she confronted Shadday, he sat on the ground and started crying, initially telling her that he did not remember doing anything, that he had been asleep. She kicked him out of the home and immediately reported the incident to the Pacific County Sheriff's Office.

Vitality Massage get Infrared Body Wraps

Vitality Massage has been in downtown Raymond since Brighton Rehab left Amy Woodard officially opened the clinic on December 1 of 2015. Woodard sat down with the Willapa Harbor Herald to discuss how she came to be a massage therapist: "I'm a massage therapist. I'm born and raised here," said Woodard, "I was 35 years old when I started to go back to college at Grays Harbor and I was going to be an ultrasound tech. I went to work over the summer for Cozy Little doing office work and she totally inspired me. Two months later I was starting massage school in Olympia," said Woodard.
