Many people find the frenzied pace of November and December a bit overwhelming. School concerts, parent-teacher conferences, holiday parties and events, shopping, work deadlines, inclement weather, family visits, travel, additional church and community activities, and other events can leave individuals and families stretched thin and exhausted. If you pick up a winter cold or the flu during this period, it's even worse.

Happy Veterans Day, one of four National holidays that fall on a particular date rather than "always on Monday". The others are New Years Day, 4th of July and Christmas Day. The Uniform Monday Holiday Act established the "always on Monday" rule in 1971, giving many workers 3-day weekends. Anyone older than 50 is likely to remember the days before Washington's and Lincoln's birthdays were combined to become President's Day (3rd Monday of Feb.) Veterans Day was initially an "always on Monday" holiday but reverted back to November 11 in 1978. The holiday was established in 1919 to celebrate the Armistice Day that ended World War I.

Due to the panic induced by the attack against Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, Americans on the west coast were so much in fear of another attack or even an invasion that a weather balloon that was seen over Los Angeles was targeted by anti aircraft efforts and rained hot metal debris down onto the city. Americans were more paranoid than ever with the German U-Boats sinking merchant ships that were in sight off of the coast; the war was on the United States' doorstep. The United States Coast Guard led an important role to protect the nation during this period of uncertainty: to prevent enemy infiltration from the sea.
