The Herald talked to Mike Tully, who was recently appointed athletic director at Raymond High School. Tully earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Western Washington University in 2002. He graduated from Raymond HS in 1998. Tully teaches seventh grade science and junior high physical education. Mike is entering his 11th year at the Raymond School District.

Come celebrate 100 years of Pacific County 4-H! At this year's Pacific County Fair, you can enter past 4-H projects for a special display honoring 4-H history. This is a non-premium point class but entries will receive a special centennial 4-H ribbon. Please no live exhibits. Entries will be accepted Sunday August 23 from 3 PM - 6:30 PM and Monday August 24 from 10 AM - 7 PM and Tuesday August 25 from 2 - 6 PM in the 4-H Building on the Pacific County fairgrounds. We are accepting any item a 4-H member past or present has entered into any county or state fair. Do you still have your dress from fashion review of last record book? Pack them up and re-enter them.

A reunion of the Raymond High School class of 1960 celebrating their 55th year as graduates was held on August 1 at the American Legion Hall in Raymond.

For the 30th year the jazz beat continues at the Jazz & Oysters Festival in Ocean Park. The event will be held August 15 for an afternoon of funk, bop and rhythm and blues.

Recent weather patterns have some of us very happy to live in the Pacific Northwest. Thanks to cool nights and daytime temperatures under 100º, I'm surviving another summer without air conditioning. Rules of thumb: 1. Open windows at night. 2. Use fans (ceiling, furnace, floor and window, exhaust) to increase cool air circulation. 3. Close windows ASAP if the sun comes up early or if 90+º temperatures are predicted. 4. Keep the fans going (except for the exhaust ones) - the air they circulate is still cooler than what is outside.

Sunday morning gospel wound up the 31st Annual St Helens Bluegrass Festival last weekend, where Phillip Steinmetz and his Sunny Tennesseans lauded the largest audience to date at this event, and General Cothren and his team for first rate promotion and support, promising to return next year.

City Wide Yard Sale was a hit. The Park Board raised $108 and Steve & Claudia donated their yard sale proceeds of $76. Thanks to all that donated this year.

I thought it was time for another stroll down memory lane. When I was a youngster living in downtown Winlock, I remember the Shoe Store which was owned by Mr. Legat, he fixed all your shoes and always greeted you with a smile. Then there was The Butcher shop which was owned by Mr. Prigmore and Mr. Inman, this was a truly old fashioned butcher shop and they had the best cuts available. And last but not least was the Safeway Grocery store (which was located where the city hall is now). Winlock was a bustling downtown!!

Alice Blenn of Centralia died peacefully and went to her heavenly home on August 3, 2015.

The Raymond Fire Department along with Fire District 3 and the Department of Natural Resources responded to a property just off of the highway near Menlo that caught fire on Sunday, August 9.

Keep your eyes peeled for the new Pier One Pantry at the location of the old Cafe Omni, which is a farmer's market and local artist show case, opening around Labor Day.

At the August 4 Public Utility District No. 2 meeting, Bonneville Power Administration rates that will be passed down to local PUD customers go into effect this October 1.

General Manager Doug Miller spoke that BPA has made their final decision about the new rate structure and will see rates depending on service ranging from 4.4% to as much as 7.9%. The PUD management and staff will have the final evaluation about the rate increase ready for public information at the next PUD meeting in Long Beach, August 18.

More than one-third of Washington's wastewater treatment plants - 127 - have received an Outstanding Performance Award from the state Department of Ecology for perfect performance in 2014.

Each of the plants passed all environmental tests, analyzed all samples, turned in all state-required reports, and avoided permit violations during 2014.

Raymond High School Athletic Director Mike Tully is initiating a new new program, Proactive Coaching. for student-athletes that gets athletes more involved with the local community. The goal is for it to have a positive affect on both the school and the community as a whole.

There will be a fall sports parent meeting in the Raymond High School Commons on Sunday, August 16th at 6pm.

The local men's league is back after a short break and is getting closer to their final tournament of their summer session. With the final night of Willapa Basketball Association Men's League coming to a close the Pitchwood Snags were able to defend their league crown in dramatic fashion once again. Styles Acrey hit the game winning 3-pointer at the buzzer against Pacific Eye Clinic to seal up the first place finish.

The 12s' Fan Fest and Beach Party Weekend has kicked off the professional football season in Ocean Shores. Special guest Mama (Delisa) Lynch was invited to the beach to help the raising of the 12th man flag, and the 12s gathered at the convention center on Friday night in anticipation of watching their favorite team test their metal in a pre-season game. The festival ran from Friday, August 14 to Sunday, August 16 and included activities and events such as a bon fire and karaoke along with kite flying demonstrations and scavenger hunts.

It was another successful car show in Elma with the annual Heat on the Street Car and Motorcycle Show.

The cruise-in brought over 100 vehicles on Friday night and 30 of those took part in the scheduled poker runs. The Midnight Cruizers of Grays Harbor took the numbers with the club bringing in the most participants and was awarded the Best Car Club Representation award. And the Elma Police took to Segways to patrol the event.

For the 2015 Grays Harbor County primary election several incumbents did not fair well or are in a neck-and-neck race going into the general election come November 3.

Voter turnout was down 4% from the 2011 election when at that time there were 30 precincts. Now with 47 precincts representing over 26,500 voters, this primary was decided by just over 31% of those registered or 8,300 as compared to 8,700 in 2011.

Summertime on the Harbor is now in full swing and we thought it apt to take a look back at summer activities of years past.

Kevin Acuff and Jim Beerbower are being made new members of East Grays Harbor Centennial Rotary club. On the 13th Jim Beerbower will have time to tell us about himself and his excellent work record with the company that is now called Vertellus. They had a booth at the Grays Harbor Fair teaching young people how to make plastic. Jim has been with this company when it was Ventron, Morton, Morton-Thiacoll, Dow Chemical and now Vertellus.

The 6th annual Discover Lake Sylvia Fall Festival will take place Saturday, September 19, 2015 at Lake Sylvia State Park in Montesano.
