The auction of a planned subdivision in Winlock is expected to proceed next week, according to legal counsel involved with the sale, after the property owner failed to meet a Monday deadline to bring himself out of default.

Attorney Jacob Cohen, successor trustee acting in the interests of Valley High Investments, confirmed Tuesday Grand Prairie Mountain View Estates, owned by Chehalis developer Phil Smith, will be sold June 19 at to satisfy a debt of more than $900,000 Smith owes after purchasing the property in early 2013.

Members of the Winlock City Council failed to pass a motion Monday night seeking to pursue a contract for police services as most officials say they need additional time to consider their options.

Though Council Member Aaron Mummert had put forward a motion to officially dedicate Winlock's efforts toward a police contract, a proposal he has strongly advocated for since last year, the vote to do so was tied, with Mayor Lonnie Dowell supporting the no-votes, stating he felt the council was not in a position yet to make an informed decision on the matter.

The Chehalis Eagles will be hosting their annual car show Saturday with activities and fundraisers open to the public.

Scheduled for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 1993 S. Market Blvd., in Chehalis, the show will feature both finished and unfinished cars, as well as live music and raffles. Registration opens at 8 a.m. and the fee is $20 per vehicle, with dash plaques for the first 75 entries registered. A sunny and warm Saturday greeted guests and car enthusiasts at the Country Cruisers Car Club's annual car show at McMurphy Park, in Vader. More than 130 vehicles were entered, according to organizers, with Best in Show going to a sparkling red 1954 Chevrolet hardtop owned by Joe Bailey, of Vancouver. The Winlock School District has announced the return of their Summer Meal Program, which will provide free breakfast and lunch to local students starting next month.

Scheduled to run from July 6 through 31, the program is available to all children 18 years old or younger and will be taking place at the Winlock Miller Elementary School cafeteria.

This is a busy week for the ladies: the Women's Club holds its Salad Luncheon and Meeting on Wednesday at noon and the will Red Hat Ladies Gather on Thursday at 2 p.m. Both groups meet in Pioneer Hall and welcome all ladies in Ryderwood to join them. The Red Hatters will be busy planning for their Annual High Tea on Thursday, June 25.

Organizers for the Fourth of July Celebration are still looking for vendors and entertainers to provide family-friendly music and services for the evening. If you're interested, call Reggie Smith at (360) 751-4034. So far, a parade is scheduled for 2 p.m., live music from 5 to 9 p.m. and a fireworks display at 10 p.m., all free to the community.

Thursday is the new deadline to apply for free side sewer replacement. Open to both homeowners and renters, this is an opportunity for those with certain income qualifications to have their private side sewers replaces at no cost, which will help the city reduce the strain on Vader's sewer system. It is hard to believe that Egg Day is just short of two weeks away. As many of you know, I love Egg Day and I enjoy seeing everyone who comes to town. There is a lot going on this year so please join us for the fun. I will be there and so will my Mom, the 1958 Egg Day Queen Diana Sorensen Hoffman. Egg Day has a long history not just in Winlock but also in our family, Kathy Sorensen Brack, my cousin was also an Egg Day Queen. I look forward to this event every year!!

Authorities are seeking help solving a burglary taking place in Chehalis last month.

Between May 22 and 23, an unknown number of suspects entered a shop building on the 100 block of Bunker Creek Rd. and stole a Stihl weed eater, a Stihl leaf blower, a Sears air compressor and Leopold binoculars. The estimated loss is $1,100.

Lewis County Fire District 15 has again submitted a letter of intent to withdraw from Lewis County Medic One by this time next year as remaining districts struggle to prevent layoffs scheduled for July 1.

Presented to the Medic One Board of Directors during a special meeting June 4, the letter describes how the commissioners of District 15, based in Winlock, are concerned the financial strain placed on their district amid current efforts to sustain Medic One may negatively affect the fire and EMS services rendered by District 15, should they continue with the agency.

Local fire and EMS calls between June 1 and 7.

Six sentences, one dismissal and three warrants were issued by Judge Steven Buzzard during Winlock Municipal Court on Thursday.
