SOUTH BEND - At the April 13 South Bend City Council Meeting, a presentation by Three Rivers Mosquito & Vector Control advised the council of what is in store for this year's approach to the annual mosquito infestation.

Local kids are expected to be among those performing at the Soroptimist-Kiwanis 2015 Youth Talent Show in Centralia this Saturday.

Scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. at the Historic Fox Theater (123 S Tower Ave.), the show will feature performers in age groups 8 and younger, 9-13, and 14 through senior year of high school, while prizes of up to $250 will be awarded to the winners.

Patrons of the Olequa Senior Center, in Winlock, have elected three new members to their Advisory Board amid efforts to reinvigorate the center's role in the community.

Chosen during the annual general meeting of the board, area residents Mary West, Jan Kramer and Mildred Wood were elected to fill three vacant positions on the 10-person board, which meets regularly to coordinate fundraising efforts for the center.

A team of students from Toledo High School will be traveling to Seattle this weekend to represent Washington in the national Life Smarts competition.

Led by Coach Rene Ketchum, the team of five students (Austyn Smith, Daniel Echtle, Adam Slighte, Aaron Bratina, and Alex Palermo) will depart for Seattle this Friday and join 49 other teams competing in categories related to consumer savvy and awareness.

There's just a week and a half left to get ready for the spring Garage Sales on April 24 & 25. Town folks having Sales are asked to mark their addresses on the maps located in Community Hall, the Café and the RISA office. For residents who aren't having their own sales, the Women's Club will accept donations for their big sale every day until the Sale.

Due to a shortage of volunteer chefs this month, there will be no meal served at the Café this Friday. To my knowledge, this is the first time this has happened since this all-volunteer method of financially supporting the Café was instituted about six years ago. The Park Board has announced the approval of a memorial for Jasper Henderling-Warner to be established at Werden Park, in Downtown Vader. Donations are being sought by organizers of the memorial, who are hoping to raise around $500 and state they are already well toward their goal. The Park Board is also continuing to search for volunteers to help with upcoming spring projects, and those interested are encouraged to contact Krohn.

Long-time Vader resident and City Councilor Andy Wilson (foreground, right) hits the dance floor during a celebration of his 90th birthday Friday at American Legion Post 155, in Longview. Accompanied by family and friends, Wilson told those in attendance he was grateful to have shared so many fond memories with them, stating, "we had some good ones, a lot of you know."

A Vader man has been arrested for rendering criminal assistance to a teenaged runaway, according to the Lewis County Sheriff's Office.

Miguel A. Valdivia, 18, was contacted April 12 on the 100 block of Spring Ct., in Vader, after detectives received a tip that a runaway who had been the subject of an ongoing investigation was at a residence in the area. The runaway in question was located at the residence, while Valdivia was located attempting to hide in the back yard.

Authorities are seeking help investigating the theft of Navy memorabilia last month in the Chehalis area.

Sometime between March 16 and 17, an unknown number of suspect entered a residence on the 100 block of Macomber Rd., south of Chehalis, and stole tools, a chainsaw, a Navy ring and Navy dog tags. The estimated loss is $500.

Commissioners with Cowlitz-Lewis Fire District 20 have approved a resolution asking voters to consider an EMS levy increase during the November General Election.

Approved unanimously by commissioners during their regular meeting on Thursday night, the resolution asks voters to consider increasing the permanent levy rate for emergency medical services from $0.095 per $1,000 of assessed value to $0.50 per $1,000 of assessed value as the district seeks to overcome increases in the costs to provide such services.

It's easy to spout off numbers, especially when they've been written down for you, but demonstrators at a recent rally in Olympia had quite a bit more to share with passers by.

Those organizing the Washington branch of Million March Against Child Abuse, held Saturday and Monday at the Capitol, could speak from their own perspective about what child abuse means, and it wasn't long before members of the public approaching the group began to share their own stories, as well.

Winlock Police Chief Terry Williams has announced his intent to retire as of June 30 after spending 15 years as head of the Winlock Police Department.

Williams had submitted a letter to Mayor Lonnie Dowell on March 31 detailing his intent to step down, and is scheduled to formally announce his decision during Monday's meeting of the Winlock City Council.

The Winlock City Council has chosen to begin exploring all law enforcement options before them as they prepare for the departure of Police Chief Terry Williams, who has informed them of his intent to retire as of June 30.

Discussed during the council's regular meeting Monday night, officials said they would like to begin advertising for a vacant chief's position, as well as that of a patrolman's, while also gathering information regarding a possible contract for police services with a neighboring agency. Mayor Lonnie Dowell had said the city's options could be to either hire a new chief, hire a patrolman and contract for chief services, or contract for all law enforcement services, with the priority being which option would save the city the most money without diminishing coverage.
