Community Announcements 02.25.15

Ryderwood's Spring Arts & Crafts Fair and Quilt Display is planned for May 15 & 16, with vendors able to sign up for limited spaces at this time. The Arts & Crafts Fair will take place in the two large rooms of Community Hall, while the Quilt Display will be held in Pioneer Hall.

Due to the popularity of the Fair, the number of vendors will be limited to 35 so applications should be submitted quickly. The deadline for all applications is May 8. The cost is $20 for each 6 ft.-by-6 ft. space, table included. Interested vendors should contact Norma at (360) 295-3672 for an application.

Winlock hires new Athletics Director for Middle/High School
Winlock hires new Athletics Director for Middle/High School

The Winlock School Board has hired a new athletics director (AD) for their middle and high school programs as part of efforts to improve the experience of athletes within the district.

Approved during the board's Feb. 18 meeting, officials unanimously confirmed recently-hired middle school teacher Ben Suhrbier as the new AD, taking such responsibilities off of High School Principal Brian Maley and Middle School Principal Dennis Tauscher, who had been leading their schools' respective sports programs in the absence of an AD since 2013.

Winlock students preparing to perform at National Migrant Education conference

The Winlock School District's Mexico Within the Heart dance group has announced they will be performing in Seattle next month for the National Migrant Education Program conference.

Scheduled for the weekend of March 22, conference organizers had specifically invited the students to perform, with group coordinator Rosie Luna stating this will be the first time her students have taken part in such a large-scale venue.

Ryderwood News 02.25.15

The end of the shortest month of the year always sneaks up on me, but this marvelous weather has been incredible. Crocuses and daffodils are bursting with flowering shrubs right behind. The first mowing of the season is happening about now. Ryderwood is beautiful in the spring.

On Thursday at 2 p.m., all ladies in the area are invited to a Doll Show being sponsored by Ryderwood's Tea-Hee Red Hats. It will be held in Community Hall and refreshments will be served. It is certain to be a fun afternoon.

Winlock Egg Day is coming up on June 19 and 20, with the Queen's coronation on the evening of June 19. Winlock has been celebrating Egg Day since 1921, one of the oldest festivals in Washington State. Winlock was one of the largest producers of poultry and egg's for so many years that it was eventually given "The Worlds Largest Egg." For many years residents of Winlock have looked forward to the big event. This year will be no egg-ception, we will all crowd in to town and watch the floats and catch up with people we see.

Winlock shortlisted for $5 million in state funds

The State Department of Ecology has selected the City of Winlock to receive roughly $5 million in grants and loans to repair their troubled sewer system, according to a draft list published last week.

According to the list, which awaits approval by the state legislature, the city would receive $4.38 in grants and $606,000 in loans, with $193,800 of the loans expected to be forgiven due to the city's hardship status, and the rest to be paid back at 2.4 percent APR.

Castle Rock upsets their way to District title
Castle Rock upsets their way to District title

They may have finished 3rd in their league, but the Castle Rock Rockets boys basketball team polished off La Center on Friday night for their first District IV Championship since 2009.

This win came on the heels of two additional surprise victories by a group of kids that surprised more than a few through the regular season. The first was on a trip to Hoquiam where CR took on the number-two team from the 1A Evergreen Conference and escaped with a 51-45.

District approves lease for Toledo Tel building

The Toledo School Board has accepted an offer to lease Toledo Tel's former office building downtown as a way to relocate from their current portable building across from Toledo Middle School.

Approved during the board's Feb. 19 meeting, the agreement is for the district to pay $500 per month to rent the building on Ramsey Way, which Toledo Tel left largely unoccupied after moving their offices to their facility on Plomondon Rd. last year. According to Superintendent Sharon Bower, the proposal from Toledo Tel would include the cost of utilities in the rent payment, while the district is already paying $320 for utilities at their current site, she stated.

Local wrestlers place at Mat Classic

Wrestlers from Winlock, Toledo and Castle Rock all placed in the top five at the WIAA Mat Classic in Tacoma on Saturday.

Toledo's Dalton Yoder (220) and Castle Rock's Austin Darvell (182 pounds) both grabbed second place in the competition.

Toledo faces two undefeated teams, place second at Districts

There is no more difficult small-school basketball district tournament than that of District IV, or Southwest Washington, with 16 teams including two unbeatens at the start of the post-season foray.

The Toledo boys basketball team navigated three rounds of the tournament before falling as the 51st consecutive victim to Morton/White Pass in a 67-62 double overtime thriller at W.F. West High School on Saturday night.

Crime Stoppers 'Crime of the Week'

Authorities are seeking help solving an open arson investigation regarding an incident in Chehalis last fall.

Sometime between 7 p.m. Oct. 13 and 8 a.m. Oct. 14, an unknown number of suspects attempted to burn debris and a plastic trash container at the back of a building on the 700 block of S. Market Blvd. The Chehalis Police Department is seeking an arrest for arson and malicious mischief in connection with the incident.

Fire districts in Toutle, Castle Rock closer to agreement on ALS services

Fire officials in North Cowlitz County are closer to an arrangement by which Toutle would pay Castle Rock for paramedic services, though further compromises are expected before both sides reach an agreement.

Discussed during a workshop held Feb. 18, officials from Cowlitz County Fire District 3, in Toutle, presented a proposal to Cowlitz County Fire District 6, in Castle Rock, outlining what District 3 felt they could pay for paramedic services, which District 6 currently provides to patients in the Toutle area.
