This winter, local residents can take advantage of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program offered through Centralia College. As a service to our community, accounting students will be volunteering their time and skills to help area residents complete and electronically submit their 2014 income tax returns. This free service is open to all area residents who are not self-employed. (Those requiring an IRS Schedule C are not eligible for this service.)
The Cowlitz Prairie Grange officially inducted a dozen new members during their meeting the evening of Jan. 14. Among those obligated as Fourth Degree members were Shelly & Dale Allen, Ashley & John Beaman, Ed Borte, Chris Blair, Bailee Phillips & Jacob Dailey, Nora & Matt Davis, Jill Davis and Kaleb Thompson.
Local students with Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) were treated to free archery lessons Saturday in Napavine from none other than Washington Lieutenant Governor Brad Owen.
Program members from across Lewis County were able to attend and learn some of the basics of bow-and-arrow marksmanship from Owen, a certified archery instructor and advocate for mentorship of young persons, which he accomplishes on top of his duties helping to lead the state.
The Winlock Lions Club will be hosting Bunco Saturday at 6 p.m. in the Community Building, complete with food and prizes.
The cost is $20 per player, with proceeds to be used toward the Egg Days Royalty Achievement Award, among other community projects. It's been pretty wet in our mini-rainforest this week and winds got pretty brisk the other night, but there were a couple of really nice days thrown in for good measure. And I overheard someone the other day saying they noticed the days are getting longer. Not exactly longer days, just longer daylight hours.

Winlock has endorsed a proposal for Napavine to potentially connect with Winlock's sewer system, as Napavine officials continue to explore their options for wastewater treatment services.
Discussed during the regular meetings of each city's councils last week, the offer from Winlock was put on the table as Napavine looks for ways to avoid a significant rate increase if they continue to receive services through the City of Chehalis.

Deputies arrested local resident Kyle E. Rogers, 33, after a brief standoff in Winlock on Jan. 19, according to the Lewis County Sheriff's Office.
Rogers had been wanted on suspicion of multiple felonies as well as a Department of Corrections warrant for escaping community custody, and had even been featured Jan. 10 on Washington's Most Wanted.
Fire officials in Northern Cowlitz County are getting closer to an agreement whereby Fire District 6, in Castle Rock, can begin charging Fire District 3, in Toutle, for paramedic service, despite concerns about the potential impact on District 3's budget.
Commissioners and volunteers from both districts met during a workshop Jan. 14 to discuss their expectations of such an agreement, as District 6 has begun invoicing District 3 $380 per dispatch, while District 3 says they are unwilling to honor such invoices unless an interlocal agreement is in place.
Local residents are encouraged to take part in an upcoming spaghetti feed and silent auction to benefit Jeff Fosburg, a firefighter/EMT from Mossyrock currently battling a severe lung infection.
Fosburg has been in the ICU since Dec. 9 with a case of bacterial pneumonia and, though he is expected to recover, he remains in a medically-induced coma and will not return to work for a projected three-to-six months.
A Vader man was arrested on multiple charges after being involved in a collision near Battle Ground on Jan. 14, according to the Washington State Patrol.
Jeffery D. Tester, 32, was contacted on SR 503 at Milepost 16, north of Battle Ground, while officers were responding to a collision involving a 2004 Nissan Altima driven by Tester and a 2007 Ford F-150 driven by a 55-year-old Yacolt man.
