Everybody was a buzz with the events of the day all absorbed with water damage and what they experienced with the increase of rain. Some spoke to being very busy during their full-time employment, others remarking simple damage to their property, but at the drop of the gavel by Mayor Jason Dunsmoor, the Raymond City Council got right down to business.

The Lewis County Genealogical Society has announced Jarlee McCormick will be the next guest speaker during the upcoming meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 20.

The Librarian for the Chehalis LDS Family History Center (FHC), McCormick will be speaking about how the FHC can help local residents the researching their own genealogy. The LDS Church has one of the largest free genealogy databases, and McCormick is expected to give an update on any changes to their library and will speak about new tools and resources.

The Toledo Community Library has a new exhibit open to guests hoping to learn more about the area's past.

The library's History Room, located in the back of the facility, contains a collection of documents, photographs and other artifacts on loan from the Toledo Historical Society, as well as a large number of newspapers on microfilm donated from the estate of Glenn Ramsey.

This is Barb Lewis and, a number of years ago, I read a book called The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio by Terry Ryan, and was recently reminded of it when I heard of a Winlock lady who was winning prizes, a LOT of prizes!

The book is the true story of a mother, Evelyn Ryan, from a very small town, who won many jingle-writing contests in the 1950s and 60s. It's such an interesting and inspirational book about this mom of 10 kids, who, despite so many obstacles, kept a positive attitude about life.

The Game Night on New Year's Eve was a huge success. Different groups continuously played cribbage, Mexican Train, 5-Crown, Pinochle, Backgammon and more.

This week's activities include a Tea-Hee Red Hats Gathering at 2 p.m. on Thursday in Pioneer Hall. It's an afternoon of fun and games for the ladies in red & purple. Plans for the next Outing on Jan. 22 will be made at that time. "All play and no work!" is the motto.

The first meeting of 2015 for the Vader City Council is scheduled for this Thursday at 6 p.m. in City Hall. Be sure to look on the bulletin board to see what will be on this week's agenda, and bring your comments and concerns about city business to the meeting.

The Board of Commissioners for Cowlitz-Lewis Fire District 20 will also be meeting on Thursday at 7 p.m. at the fire hall for their first regular meeting of the year. Officials with the district have said they expect to continue seeking paramedic services from Lewis County Medic One, despite significant financial challenges faced by the agency, but still reserve the right to exercise a letter of withdrawal submitted in 2013, if the need arises.

Since it is the beginning of a new year, I thought it was time to take another trip down memory lane about being from Winlock.

How many people remember Dr. Dugaw at his office across from the old feed store and the smell of his cherry tobacco? I think that was before we knew that smoking was bad for us. Dr. Yahn was the dentist in town and Novocain was optional.

Registration deadlines are fast-approaching for those wishing to vote in the Feb. 10 Special Election.

Residents within the Castle Rock, Evaline and Toledo School Districts, as well as Lewis County Fire District 2, are being asked to consider property tax propositions, and the deadline to weigh in on such issues are as follows:

Toledo Head Coach J.B. Ewers had a look of relief on his face after the Toledo girls defeated Naselle 68-38 in a non-league contest at the Ilwaco Holiday Tournament on Dec. 29.

Emily Barge led scoring with 13 points, while Casee Rice added 12 more. Josie Bowen also broke into double figures with 11 points.

Lewis County Department of Emergency Management has activated the Emergency Operations Center in preparation for impending flooding in Lewis County. Flooding is expected on the Newuakum and Chehalis Rivers.

There is already water over the roadway in several areas along the Newaukum River. Motorists are advised not to drive through deep standing water and obey all road closure signs.

For the last 33 years, Winlock resident Carrie Pennington has been serving her community as a volunteer EMT and, as of the end of last month, decided it was time to retire.

First serving with Winlock Ambulance Service, then with Lewis County Fire District 15, Pennington said three decades of being in the brotherhood of emergency responders has been difficult to say goodbye to.

Newly-elected Lewis County Sheriff Rob Snaza was sworn in on Dec. 30 and said he hopes to see increasing progress in how his office tackles drug crimes and addresses mental health issues.

Succeeding one-term sheriff Steve Mansfield, who had declined to seek re-election, Snaza, who received 78 percent of voter support in November, said he hopes to build upon many of the programs implemented by Mansfield, stating the former sheriff had done an "outstanding" job while in office.
