Castle Rock officials are debating whether or not to hire an additional public works employee after two positions were eliminated within the department in January due to budgetary constraints.
Discussed during the Nov. 10 Castle Rock City Council meeting, some council members have expressed concerns over a preliminary proposal in the 2015 budget which includes funding for seven full-time positions within the department rather than the current six.
Authorities report they are unable to determine the origin of a structure fire in Vader last week that destroyed two buildings, stating too little evidence remains available to identify a cause.
Fire Investigator Ted McCarty, who works primarily with the Chehalis Fire Department, said in an interview Wednesday the official cause of the fire, which began Sunday morning on the 800 block of A St., has been labeled "Undetermined" because the remains of the house where the fire started have been too-thoroughly damaged to further his investigation.
Paramedics with Lewis County Medic One have voiced their opposition to the leadership of Operations Chief Grant Wiltbank in a unanimously-supported vote of no confidence and are calling for a complete overhaul of how the agency is managed.
Detailed in a letter dated Oct. 28 and made public during the meetings of local fire commissioners on Thursday, the paramedics, represented by IAFF Local 4863, stated they are concerned Medic One is not responding adequately to increasing gaps between revenues and expenditures and, while they appreciate Wiltbank's continued advocacy for a strong EMS system in South Lewis County, they feel his ability to communicate and foster cooperation has been insufficient.
