Looking ahead to next month, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife will announce the final word on a tentative dig to begin Nov. 4 after marine toxin tests have been completed. That dig is tentatively scheduled on the following dates, beaches and low tides:

Lynne Goodwin of Flowers by Lynne recently won an award for her "micro macramé" work in a national contest. The award was for the Fire Mountain Gems Seed Bead contest. Goodwin actually got the silver medal in the contest for "wearability," meaning that the necklace she crafted was not only pleasing to the eye, but that you could wear it as well. Macramé is a form of knotting textiles, as apposed to weaving them. Micro macramé is just what it sounds like: macramé on a very small scale.

SOUTH BEND - The South Bend City Council went straight to work running the first of the Public Hearings to discuss the possibility of introducing a B&O Tax and a 1% Property Tax Levy.

MENLO - South Bend defeated rival Willapa Valley in four close fought games Monday night at Tenoski Gym. The Lady Indians won 25-19, 26-24, 24-26, and 25-20.

Veterans Resource Fair this Saturday

The Lewis County Veterans Advisory Board will be hosting a Veterans Resource Fair this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Museum. Experts will be on hand to help answer questions about jobs, housing and benefits, while local veterans groups will be available as well.

Family Festival in Vader

The Vader Assembly of God Church, along with the Vader Lions Club, is hosting a Fall Family Festival on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m.

Come for games, food and fun. Children must be accompanied by an adult, and please no scary costumes. Vader Assembly is located at 302 6th St., in Vader. For more information, please call (360) 295-3756.

Students at Toledo High School saw around 25 participants sign up for their first 5K race on Saturday to raise awareness for breast cancer, with more such events planned for the near future.

Coordinated by FBLA, the race saw residents from all over the area trekking a winding path through Toledo starting at the high school and reaching as far as Kemp Olson Memorial park and the Boat Launch.

First off, this coming Sunday is the end of Daylight Saving Time, so be sure to turn your clocks back an hour. As far north as we are, I'd just as soon we had DST year around - I'd rather it stayed light a little later rather than lighter in the morning.

City Councilman Andy Wilson is still looking for photos of past mayors to help complete a wall of portraits representing the history of the city's leadership. Andy is calling on all residents who may have access to such photos to provide them for display or at least for the purpose of making a copy for the collection. Andy has emphasized how significant the contributions have been of our past mayors and is hoping the display, currently in City Hall, can help these men and women be remembered.

Halloween is this week and I look forward to seeing the younger kids in our community dressing up in their favorite costumes. I remember trick or treating in downtown, going house to house and eating as much candy as my little heart desired. Winlock is a great community for trick or treating. You can feel safe that your kids can walk around and get candy from residents in the downtown area.

We have a lot of activities coming up in Winlock. I hope you can attend at least one of the below mentioned fun filled activity.

Jack L. Spath, 90, passed away on Sept. 28, 2014 in Centralia, Washington. He was born in Pe Ell, Washington to William and Kathryn (Fronia) Spath of Salkum, Washington.

He attended school in Mossyrock and graduated from Mossyrock High School and attended Centralia College.

The South Bend Police is asking those participating in the South Bend Business Trick-or-Treating to please use the designated crosswalks.

The Toledo City Council has opted to forego joining a coalition of cities seeking funding for state infrastructure mandates on the basis the coalition would likely provide services Toledo is already receiving.

Discussed during the council's Oct. 20 meeting, a motion had been made by Council Member Steve Dobosh to join the coalition but failed for lack of a second, with officials later stating they would be willing to reconsider based on the future status of the coalition.

The Vader City Council has announced they are exploring the possibility of renaming the town back to Little Falls, with talks revolving around the anticipated costs associated with doing so.

Council Member Kevin Flynn reported during their Oct. 23 meeting a re-naming of Vader would be part of upcoming budget discussions, as the city would be required to pay for changes in signs, maps, letterheads, official documents and other expenses, with the state requiring such funding to be kept in reserve should a new name be approved.

Raymond whipped host Rainier last Thursday 25-7, 25-18 and 25-12.

The Seagulls hosted Ocosta for a 2B Pacific League football game and senior night at home, taking the night 41-0.

On the road the combo Pe Ell/Willapa Valley football Titans brought home another win for the 2B Central running over the Pirates of Adna 49-14.

On a blustery day on Thursday, the harbor runners went to the league championships at Ocosta.

The races on the 2.95 mile course featured runners from 13 teams.

Ashton Fraser is the superstar senior athlete at Toledo High School that nobody outside of the building knows much about. He doesn't carry the rock like Taylor Hicks, or shoot three pointers like Brent Wood, but he has been an effective leader on Toledo's Cross Country team, who won the Central League title this week.

Fraser has been consistently the highest-placing runner for Toledo on a team of seven. He finished second just ahead of teammate and all-around athlete Forrest Wallace in a field of 56 runners on Thursday, as the Indian runners dominated the rest of the Central 2B League.

The Toledo boys Cross Country team was the first locally to bring home championship hardware by winning the 2B Central League title on Thursday during a meet at Mossyrock Park.

The Indian boys placed their first five (scoring) runners in the top 11 places. There were a total of 56 runners in the race.

A Winlock man was cited after crashing his van into a utility pole near Winlock Saturday, according to the Lewis County Sheriff's Office.

The 38-year-old driver of a 1997 Chevrolet Express had been traveling south on the 100 block of Knowles Rd., east of Winlock, when he reportedly drifted into the northbound lane and then off the road and into a utility pole, breaking the fixture and totaling his vehicle.

Authorities are seeking help investigating a burglary taking place in Winlock earlier this year.

Sometime between Aug. 31 and Sept. 2, an unknown number of suspects forced entry through the door of a business on the 100 block of Hale Rd. E and stole an Allegro hand-held computer worth around $2,000.

A group of second graders from Winlock Miller Elementary School are led through a "smoke house" on Thursday with assistance from Lt. Patrick Jacobson (holding door), of Lewis County Fire District 15, as part of the district's annual focus on Fire Prevention Week.

Lewis County Medic One has reported a steep drop in revenue since the beginning of 2014 due in part to recent healthcare reforms, as well as reductions in local call volume.

Discussed during the Oct. 21 meeting of the Medic One Interlocal Board, officials reported average collection rates for ambulance transportation have dropped from $702 per transport last year to $575 per transport this year, which has been compounded by a reduction in call volume experienced since July.
