Area gardening enthusiasts are invited to the Lewis County Master Gardeners' bi-annual Gardening For Everyone event scheduled for this Saturday at Centralia College.

This free event features classes open to all members of the public and covering a wide range of topics, including composting, Hugelkultur, winter care of fruit trees and much more. Classes begin at 9 a.m. and go until 2 p.m.

Tribal members both with and without traditional dress, as well as military veterans, led the Grand Entry during the 15th annual Cowlitz Indian Tribal Pow Wow at Saturday Toledo High School. The ceremony included presentations of singers and dancers as well as an invocation by Honorary Cowlitz Chief Row Wilson and, this year, a Hebrew prayer on the shofar by Perry Gearhart, a guest from Philadelphia who said he has been traveling the country to connect his faith with those of the Native American peoples.

We just had the first day of Fall the other day and I heard that this year is the hottest on record. But I'm happy to say that I've been able to keep my house cool enough (that's the operative word...) without figuring how to install the nice portable air conditioner I got used. (This is the kind where the entire unit is indoors and vents out the window and my windows are 5' high sliders.) I decided that since I hadn't needed it, I might as well sell it to someone who did.

It was good to see so many people come by Pioneer Hall for the Firewise Expo on Sunday. The Firewise program is a collaboration of local, state and federal agencies to reduce the chances of wildfire in rural communities like ours. Ryderwood has been an official Firewise Community since 2010 and is the only retirement community in the State so designated.

If you have been waiting for City Hall to act on a permanent marijuana ban, be sure to attend the next Vader City Council meeting this Thursday at 6 p.m., as officials have indicated their intent to take action that night. Local residents have roughly one more month to visit the Winlock Historical Museum before they close for the winter at the end of October. Featuring photos, archives and artifacts of our town's long history, the museum is open regularly on Wednesdays from 1 to 4 p.m., with private tours available by appointment. The Olequa Senior Center is pleased to announce new exercise classes taking place regularly and open to area residents. Including aerobics, balance exercises, strengthening with weights and stretching, the classes take place Mondays through Thursdays from 9 to 10 a.m. and are taught by a trained instructor. The cost is just $30 for 10 weeks, with fee waiver available to those who need them. All area seniors are encouraged to participate.

The Winlock City Council has granted a one-year plat extension to developer Phil Smith despite concerns about a large debris pile on Smith's property, with the city's legal counsel stating one has no basis to affect the other.

Approved during the council's Sept. 22 meeting, officials unanimously supported a resolution granting the extension after City Attorney Erin Hillier explained, though the council has expressed concerns about ongoing nuisance violations on Smith's proposed subdivision, Grand Prairie Mountain View Estates, these violations do not affect his right to ask for a plat extension and do not provide grounds for the council to deny him.

The Battle of the Cowlitz began right where it left off in 2009 with Toledo the victor. After not playing for four years, the Indians rudely welcomed Winlock back to the old tradition with a 46-20 thumping on Friday night in 2B Central League play. The Indians rattled off 46 straight points in the first half while the Cardinals put on a scoring display in the fourth quarter.

Toledo QB Dalton Yoder threw just three passes but the firt two were scoring tosses. The first was a 78-yard connection to Konner Crawford and then the second found Grant McEwen for a 50-yard catch and run. Taylor Hicks ran for 98 yards and four TS while McEwen ran for a TD while playing quarterback.

The Winlock girls volleyball team started their young season with two wins over Wishkah Valley. The first victory was on the road Monday where they swept the Loggers 25-14, 25-15, 25-12 in non-league play. Emma Johnson added 11 aces while Kennedi Collins had a great game serving and defensively.

On Wednesday, Wishkah Valley came to Winlock and returned home with their second non-league loss in three days 20-25, 25-20, 25-14, 25-16. The Cardinals let the first game get away, but then won the next three to take the match. Kelsey Steveson had 10 kills, especially late in the game for the Cardinals.

The Toledo boys Cross Country team was impressive in their first meet at Onalaska on Tuesday, but their performance in the Three Course Challenge at Seaside placed them in elite company.

In the complicated scoring, the first two runners in each of three races are part of the scoring formula in the team race. Toledo finished 2nd in the 1A/2B Schools classification.
