Local favorite hiking spots await you!
Local favorite hiking spots await you!

For more than a decade now, I have been expanding my hiking adventures throughout Western Washington. My latest trip took me up the Cle Elum River towards Deception Pass in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness area. As with any person that looks for greener grass, I have found that the grass is pretty green close to home.

During this recent trip my 16-year-old son and I hiked for four days. After years of backpacking together, we have come to expect amazing things from our campsites. We love waking up and realizing a grand view of a mountain range, a deep valley or a beautiful lake right in front of us. As it turns out, those locations were few and far between or, went undiscovered until long after camp was prepared for the night.

Books by Barb and Becky - Empty Mansions, The Mysterious Life of Hugette Clark and the Spending of a Great American Fortune

This is Barb Lewis and the book I'm reviewing is called Empty Mansions, The Mysterious Life of Hugette Clark and the Spending of a Great American Fortune by Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter Bill Dedman and Paul Clark Newell, Jr., one of the few relatives ever to have spoken to Hugette Clark.

This true story starts with us learning of Hugette's father, William Andrews (W.A.) Clark, who was born in a log cabin, had nothing and became one of the richest men in America after discovering copper in Montana after the Civil War and also building railroads. He helped found Las Vegas. In 1907 his fortune was estimated at $150 million, roughly $3 billion in today's dollars.

I expect that there will be large crowds in town for the August Garage Sales this weekend. Look for sale maps on the Café porch. From what I'm hearing, there will be quite a few home sales, some of which will be quite large. There will, of course, be the Women's Club Sales at Pioneer Hall and something new is an Indoor Flea Market in the Community Hall Auditorium.

On Wednesday, there will be a car wash at the Park from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Donations will go toward having the interior of the Café painted professionally. My car will be there for sure - last week's rain turned the dust into dirty spots.

Vader News 08.20.14

This coming Monday will be the last day to apply for free side sewer replacement, and those who have not submitted an application are encouraged to do so before the deadline. Intended to help reduce leaks in the water system without placing too much of a burden on homeowners, free replacements are available to residents earning low-to-moderate income and have been made possible through a federal grant acquired by the city. Officials would like residents who have not considered applying to know many households qualify despite homeowners thinking they may not. Officials clarified the incomes of tenants rather than landlords are being taken into consideration, while some household incomes may be well above the poverty level but still moderate enough to qualify. A reduction in leaks will lead to a reduction in sewer system maintenance and, eventually, a reduction in sewer bills, so everyone is encouraged to at least call City Hall at (360) 295-3222 and find out if they may qualify.

Winlock News 08.20.14

For those who have been curious about regular columnist Lynnette Hoffman, you may remember she had taken ill and spoke about needing to endure surgery last month. Lynnette has since pulled through, against some considerable odds, and is back home in Winlock. She would like to extend many thanks to all the community members who were prayerful and supportive during these difficult times, and hopes to be up and about and putting the column together again before too long.

The Winlock Lions Club will be hosting Kids Night Out Bingo this Wednesday 6:30 p.m. in the Community Building and all kids from the area are invited to participate. Featuring prizes of school supplies as well as snacks, including ice cream and cookies, admission to this event will be two cans of non-perishable food per students, which will then be donated to the Winlock/Vader Food Bank. For more info, call (360) 785-0178.

Vader discusses engineer's report for new sewer plant options

The City of Vader is close to selecting an upgrade for its sewer plant after an engineering report identified several possible options capable of bringing the city into compliance with state regulations.

Vader's current lagoon system has been suffering from frequent violations of its discharge permit, as the purity of effluent expelled into Olequa Creek often does not meet Department of Ecology standards, and Vader has been seeking since 2009 to find options for a low-cost, effective upgrade.

Winlock turns down resolution calling for oil-by-rail reforms

The Winlock City Council has declined to pass a resolution supporting state efforts to question the transportation of Bakken crude oil through local rail systems, on the grounds such a resolution would produce no net benefit for the city.

Considered during their Aug. 11 meeting, the council had been given a resolution identical in language to one passed by the City of Chehalis July 28, which supported Governor Jay Inslee's efforts to examine Washington's rail systems for potential hazards brought by Bakken crude oil transportation.

District 6 preparing for voter outreach regarding levy increase

Commissioners for Cowlitz County Fire District 6 spent their last regular meeting discussing the ins and outs of proposing a property tax increase intended to help the district avoid a potential financial collapse.

Based in Castle Rock, officials with District 6 had chosen during their July 28 meeting to place a measure on the November ballot asking voters to consider increasing the current rate from $0.44 per $1,000 of assessed value to $1 per $1,000 in the hopes of generating enough yearly income to fund more than the bare minimum of expenses.
