Castle Rock hosting 56th annual fair this weekend

Castle Rock will be hosting their 56th annual fair this weekend with wealth of exhibits and activities for local residents.

There is plenty of entertainment with three different bands each playing one night of the fair. Two of them are local groups. Then there is the lip sync and talent contest on Saturday night. Toutle FFA logging show is each night at 7:30 p.m. For the kids, it is the wet money scramble for 12 and younger, pony rides, little animal farm, quarter arcade, and for the kids to ride the cow train to see the fair. One big attraction is the mini carnival in the Boss building. Both young and old enjoy it.

Music lesson the prize for young man's dedication at Pickers’ Fest

Regrettably, there were not many young kids watching or participating at the 14th Annual Winlock Pickers’ Fest over the weekend at Winolequa Park.

One lucky young man sat and enjoyed much of Saturday at the annual blue grass event with about 200 other spectators and musicians. 16-year-old Cameron Palmer, of Castle Rock, was the winner of the Winlock Acoustic Music Association's (WAMA) scholarship, allowing him to have a private lesson with nationally-acclaimed artist, musician and educator Stephen Bennett.

Toledo’s Wood awarded Farm Bureau scholarship for second year

Toledo’s Blake Wood has been awarded a $1,000 college scholarship from the Lewis County Farm Bureau for the second year in a row, having been an exception last year prompting the bureau to award three scholarships instead of just two. Currently attending Centralia College, Wood’s essay from last year, while he was a senior at Toledo High School, was seen by the bureau as above and beyond, and they sought special permission to include him among the scholarship recipients.

Books by Barb and Becky - A Circle of Wives

I picked this fiction book to review because as I was reading it I thought "I know this story!" Truth is stranger than fiction is a saying we all know and it certainly relates here.

I'll start with a bit of my story and how it applies to this book. My daughter had a heart/lung transplant in CA by a prominent, very well respected lung expert for children. He was a big teddy bear of a man, much loved and admired by many. His name was Dr. Lewiston, from Palo Alto.

Something special is happening on Wednesday, July 16, and I apologize for not mentioning it last week. I hope you’re reading this in time to attend our VFW/AmVets Flagpole Dedication Ceremony in the Memorial Garden at 2 p.m. Immediately following in the Park Pavilion will be a service to retire and dispose of unserviceable American flags. Both ceremonies will be memorable and all are invited to observe and participate. If your flag is looking worn, this would be a good time to consider a replacement. If you can’t make it to the ceremony, there is a receptacle for unserviceable American flags in the foyer of Community Hall.

Shooting ranges poison our land

I read your article on the shooting range in Cowlitz County with considerable interest.

As you may be aware shooting ranges are an environmental hazard. Heavy metals levels have accumulated at these sites. A number of counties in western Washington have closed old shooting ranges. In those instances owners of the ranges would be held liable for costs of cleanup. Both Lewis and Cowlitz Counties have been negligent in these matters. Lead levels are a particular concern.

STP a public health hazard

By the time anyone reads this, the "STP" bicycle run will be over. But I want to say something relevant that needs to be said.

Before retiring and moving to Lewis County, I was living in Portland when Nike decided to have a "fun run" through the Pearl District. By the time my graveyard shift was over (7am), it was clear to the hundreds of employees trying to get home to families & children that the run-route "blocked off" any means to leave the area ... that employees were "trapped" until the event concluded at 10am. I was about to write a letter to the Oregonian newspaper about this when I saw I'd been beaten out by another writer with a more compelling argument against the fun run.

Toledo told discounts for veterans not an option

The City of Toledo has determined they would not be allowed to offer special rates to military veterans for use of Kemp Olson Memorial Park after a proposal to do so had been put before the City Council last month.

Though their intent was to both show gratitude toward service members and encourage use of park facilities, City Clerk Michele Whitten reported during the council’s July 7 meeting she had researched the topic and found veterans in general are not among the categories of individuals the city is allowed to offer discounts to.
