Charleton resigns from Vader City Council

The Vader City Council is expected to discuss adding a new member to its ranks after former council member Janet Charlton resigned Fewb. 6.

A new council member could be appointed as soon as their next meeting tomorrow night, though Mayor Ken Smith has not indicated if he intends yet to do so.

Valley girls join boys as league champions

Willapa Valley captured its first Pacific League championship since 2005 by romping past rival Raymond 52-37 Thursday night at Tenoski Gym in Menlo. Lauren Friese pumped in 20 points and cousin Karli Friese (league MVP) fired in 14 for the Vikings.

Vikings clinch co-championship with North Beach

Willapa Valley left both of its arch rivals in the dust last week enroute to claiming a co-championship with North Beach. The Vikings walloped South Bend and Raymond as both the Vikings and Hyaks finished in first place in the Pacific League with identical 11-1 records. The teams squared off Monday night in Westport to decide which team would be seeded No. 1 in the league at the District IV tournament. Both teams mutually agreed to play the game or a coin flip would have decided the matter. (Please see front page for results from Monday's game.)

Murray, Cantwell Applaud Washington State Olympic Athletes

U.S. SenatorsPatty Murray (D-WA) and Maria Cantwell (D-WA) introduced a Senate Resolution to congratulate athletes from the Evergreen State who will be competing with Team USA in the 2014 Olympic and Paralympic Games, which begin tomorrow in Sochi, Russia.
