Centralia College’s Bachelor’s of Applied Science in Diesel (BASD), the college’s second bachelor’s program, was given a major stamp of approval by the Washington State Board for Community and Technical College at its meeting Feb. 6 in Olympia. The endorsement by the board was an important step in the college’s progress toward rolling out the college’s second bachelor’s degree beginning in fall quarter 2014.
“The state board has the specific responsibility to approve any new program and while we have other important hurdles that will be addressed, this approval is huge,” said Larry McGee, associate dean of the college’s baccalaureate programs. “This is a rigorous degree program that is one of only four in the entire United States and the only one on the West Coast. This gives us the green light to proceed to the next step.”
The Centralia College Theatre Department presents the heartwarming play “Almost, Maine” by John Cariani. This romantic comedy will have performances on Feb. 13-16, and again on Feb. 20-22, in the Wickstrom Studio Theatre in Washington Hall on the college campus.
Set in a fictional hamlet in northern Maine, the production is actually nine short plays all addressing men and women who are falling in and sometimes out of love.

The Winlock PTSA is holding a fundraiser to celebrate their district, as well as the Seattle Seahawks, by selling commemorative photographs of Winlock Miller Elementary School students standing by the World’s Largest Egg and cheering on their team. Prints are $20 apiece and feature a high-resolution photo of the kids in a black background (above) identifying the Hawks as Super Bowl Champions. Half of the proceeds will go to support the PTSA, and order forms are due Feb. 14, with prints expected to be delivered to the school by Feb. 21.
Elizabeth Stavig, a student at Toledo High School, is set to learn a significant lesson. In the process, she has given some of her classmates and associates in the THS FCCLA an education as well.
The quiet Stavig came across the Sole 2 Soul project through her local church, and then brought the idea to Renee Ketchum, a teacher and FCCLA advisor at Toledo High School.
Long-time library assistant Barbara Lewis has officially retired from her post at the Winlock Timberland Library, but says she by no means intents to be a stranger.
Having spent around 28 years working for the library, Lewis said she hopes to continue interacting with the community through the multitude of programs available at the library, while also filling her hankerings for a good book.
Around 40 volunteers turned out for the first Clean Up the Coop event Saturday in Winlock, despite freezing temperatures and a layer of snow throughout the city.
Organized by local business owners and community activists, Clean Up the Coop is expected to take place the second Saturday of every month for the foreseeable future, and is intended to beautify the town for the sake of its residents and those thinking of moving in.

We are still digging out of the snow as I write this, and it has been beautiful even if it’s a potentially dangerous nuisance. The best driving-in-snow tip I know is to drive like there are raw eggs under the gas and brake pedals. No sudden movements. I expect the snow will be mostly gone by the time the paper is printed and we’ll be complaining about the much-needed rain and accompanying mud...
This is a busy week for many of the ladies in town with the Women’s Club Annual Baked Potato Bar (bring toppings to share) at noon on Wednesday and the Tea-Hee Red Hats gather at 2 p.m. on Thursday for “All Play, No Work”. Both groups will meet in Pioneer Hall.

A good month has gone by since the holidays have passed and I wanted to keep everyone in the spirit. During the holidays I learned about Patti Murray. Patti has been giving back to the community for 25 years. In 2013 she made 50 baskets and sold them at IGA Cedar Village with the proceeds going to The Giving Tree. She shops throughout the year for her baskets or gets items as donations, then her fun begins. During our chat, I could tell she has a passion for this project of hers, she helps so many families have Christmas. We are blessed to have someone like her in our community. Thank you for choosing Winlock to settle in, we are glad you like it here!
Ellen Irene Boyd, of Centralia, died Feb. 4, 2014. Born May 27, 1950, she was 63 years old.

There are few better foes in the area than Onalaska, when it comes to crunch time for the Lady Cardinals basketball team. The Lady Loggers have been a long -time nemesis but, this year, Winlock got the best of them twice including a 45-39 victory last week.
Since, then, Winlock have dropped two games to highly-ranked Morton/White Pass and Pe Ell, but the Lady Cards have clinched the number seven seed from the Central League in the District IV Tournament against, most likely, Wahkiakum at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Rochester High School.
A Winlock woman was reportedly uninjured after crashing in the snow Saturday, according to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office.
The 20-year-old driver of a 2001 Ford Mustang had been traveling northbound on the 2400 block of Hwy 603, north of Winlock, when she lost control of her vehicle while attempting to shift gears while approaching a hill.
Effective Wednesday, February 12th, the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office will have longer hours at their front windows. The new business hours will be 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The office hours for the past two years had been 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. due to staff resources, and an overwhelming number of Concealed Pistol License and Pistol Transfer applications.
Washington State Patrol (WSP) wants to warn people about a phone scam occurring in Washington State requesting people to give their Social Security Number when they call an (813) Florida area code phone number as part of an identity theft investigation.
WSP has received reports of individuals getting phone calls from people identifying themselves as an official from the “Washington State Police” and the “U.S. Justice Office.” The callers are requesting people to “call today” to an (813) area code number in Florida to confirm their social security number.
