Toledo students showcase robotics skills for District Board
Toledo students showcase robotics skills for District Board

Students from Toledo Middle School showed how they could sort, arrange, launch and motorize all sorts of objects using robots in a presentation to the District Board Dec. 19.

Led by science teacher Sherrill Stead, the students have been working this past term on how to use robots for industrial, commercial and even military applications, much of which has been made possible through a $25,000 OSPI grant acquired at the beginning of the school year. The funding was used to acquire robotics kits and laptops for the class, so now two or three students can work on a project at a time rather than five or six, like before.

Ryderwood News 1.1.14

Happy New Year one and all. A new year offers lots of opportunities for making things better and happier for all. Make sure and be careful if you’re out driving either on the Eve or the Day as there are frequently folks out on the roads that shouldn’t be.

A new month means another scrumptious Town Breakfast put on by the fine guys at Ryderwood’s VFW Post 7010. They do so much for our little Town - everywhere you look there’s something they’ve either done or contributed to getting done. Things like the Town Christmas Party and Cheer Bag Projects couldn’t happen without generous contributions from them and other groups in Town.

General question: What was your New Years Resolution last year? Do you remember?

Bob Schmidt says: THANK YOU! There was a great turnout of drivers and helpers to deliver 75 large boxes of food, the most ever so far. By 9 a.m. Saturday morning (Dec. 21) they were on their way to some special families in our communities. Good job, one and all.

Whew, we made it through another holiday season, no snow at Christmas as we all had hoped for, not even a dusting.  More importantly, I enjoyed Christmas with Tommy, my folks Al and Diana and my precious niece Kennedi!

I spoke with Viola Chickese and the task of cleaning up Winlock is well on its way.  Their Jan. 28 meeting will be at 6 p.m. at the Christian Fellowship of Winlock Church, (630 Cemetery Rd.). Their first cleanup project will take place on Feb. 8 at 10 a.m., more information to follow but please mark your calendars. Feel free to confirm with Viola at (360) 785-0178.

Lonnie J. Dowell sworn in as Winlock Mayor

Winlock Mayor Lonnie J. Dowell was sworn in Dec. 23 and is expected to hit the ground running when his term begins Jan. 1.

Dowell, who succeeded former mayor Glen Cook after Cook chose not to seek re-election, inherits an ongoing contract negotiation with the city’s bargaining unit as well as a transition from the Association of Washington Cities (AWC) to the Cities Insurance Association of Washington (CIAW) after the City Council voted to change Winlock’s insurance carrier in August.

Vader ups sewer rates

The Vader City Council has passed a $5 per month increase to sewer rates in their 2014 budget to keep up with rising infrastructure costs.

Passed unanimously during their Dec. 17 meeting, the increases had originally been contested quite strongly by council members, who felt a raise in rates would negatively affect residents already feeling the pinch of a sour economy. Particularly Council Members Janet Charlton and Linda Newton had said they would flatly refuse to approve a budget that included an increase in rates, stating alternatives such as a reduction in expenditures should be sought instead.

Rose set to fill leadership void in Cardinal’s boys basketball

The Winlock basketball program has a very special senior this year. He is tall, lanky, a silky-smooth shooter with a wide wingspan, and has only been playing the game for four years.

Ironically, he doesn't even attend Winlock High School. He is actually enrolled in home school but has athletic eligibility at the local high school. According to the WIAA eligibility, home-based instruction students are categorized as regular members of a school.

‘Speed Still kills,’ cautions Washington State Patrol

For decades, the Washington State Patrol has said “speed kills.” There is a new report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and little has changed: speed still kills.

Although traffic fatalities are dropping overall, excessive speed remains a leading cause of preventable deaths. Nationally, about a third of US traffic fatalities are linked to speeding, and that holds true in Washington. Of the 437 people who died in traffic in 2012, 159 of those deaths included speed as a contributing factor.

Crime and Injury Report 1.1.14

A Vader man was pulled from a car fire on SR 506 Dec. 23 after having sped off the roadway, according to the Washington State Patrol.

The 56-year-old driver of a 1994 Pontiac Grand Am had been traveling westbound on SR 506, about three miles west on Vader, when he entered a curve “at a high rate of speed,” read the report, and left the roadway, striking a tree and catching on fire.

Medic One recovering from 2013 uncertainties

Lewis County Medic One has reported they plan to end the year in the black and soon fill a vacant paramedic position after 2013 brought financial and political uncertainty to the EMS provider.

Formed through an interlocal agreement between fire districts in Winlock, Toledo, Vader and Ryderwood, the future of Medic One had been called into question back in March and April when Winlock, Vader and Ryderwood exercised their option to leave the interlocal, with district representatives citing concerns over the financial management of the program.

Shop With a Cop sees successful turnout for 12th year

The Lewis County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank local community members for their help in making the 12th-annual Shop With a Cop program a success.

Donations were used to send deserving kids on a shopping spree at Wal-Mart Dec. 19, accompanied personally by members of law enforcement, which was followed by a ride-along in a real patrol car and pizza, provided by Papa Pete’s.
