The City of Castle Rock is accepting donations for the purchase and installation of a basketball hoop as part of ongoing efforts to develop the city park.

A blacktop has already been laid for a pair of half-courts and the city is in possession of one hoop and hoping to install a second at the same time. Officials hope they can raise roughly $1,000 for the project and report they have acquired $300 in private donations thus far.

St. Paul Lutheran Church, in Castle Rock, will be hosting a quilt show the weekend of Oct. 11 and 12.

Quilts are needed for showing as well as guests to view the artistic creations. There will be more than 100 quilts on display, with a special section featuring red and white quilts. Donations of $4 will be requested at the door, and will be used by Lutheran World Relief to send quilts to displaced persons around the world. Many will remember last year when the same donations were used to buy malaria nets for people in third world countries.

The event will be taking place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days and those with questions can call Polly Ross at (360) 274-6860, or email her at polly549@q.com. The church is located at 312 First Ave SW, in downtown Castle Rock.

The next Castle Rock School Board meeting will be held at the Vader Assembly of God Oct. 8 at 5:30 p.m. This meeting will be open to the public and those who wish to learn more or to be placed on the agenda may call the district office at (360) 501-2940.

The Cornerstone Equestrian Center, in Winlock, will be hosting a Western Dressage Clinic this weekend as the first of many regular events planned to take place at the facility since being acquired by new owners earlier this year.

Organized through the Relational Riding Academy, the clinics are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday and will teach students the finer points of dressage figures, as well as how to understand and utilize progressive training methods.

Those wishing to support the Pajama Drive taking place at Napavine High School will have a special chance to do so this Friday when Napavine plays Morton/White Pass in Randle.

Those who donate pajamas (sizes for women, children and infants) at the event will receive a raffle ticket, with a winner to be drawn at halftime. The prize will be a pick-up truck worth of firewood.

Toledo High School reported Sept. 24 student Timothy Goodwin has been named a Commended Student in the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Program for exceptional academic promise.

Goodwin was listed among 34,000 other students in the top fifth percentile of those who took the 2012 SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, of which more than 1.5 million students participated nationally.

A grain-milling and bread-making class is planned to be offered at the Vader Assembly of God Saturday, Oct. 12, and the public is welcome to attend.

Starting at 10 a.m., the class will feature free milling of up to three pounds of grain per person and teach those in attendance how to turn the flour into baked goods.

The heat got turned on when the kids from Arizona came for a visit. And then that stormy weekend with the power off almost as much as it was on. The Café served up hot food and a place to use the Internet and charge "devices". Ryderwood is just so "techy"!

The Arizona crew thought it so odd that record-setting rains were possible in the wet state. I appreciate that the former Marine re-hung my flag out in the wind and rain. And guess what they left here? Rain gear!

Sandra Gould says: Cars have been observed going around school buses when the lights are flashing. They are legally required to stop and wait, no matter which direction they are traveling while the bus is loading or unloading children.

Don’t forget about Oktoberfest at the Hope Grange! It’s all set for Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. There will be a costume contest, hot dogs, chili, ice cream, free pumpkins for children 12 and under, games, face painting, and more!

The Olequa Senior Center is now offering a new low-impact exercise class on Mondays and Fridays from 9 to 10 a.m. There’s still time to sign up, people! If you’re under 50 years of age, the cost of the class is $40. Individuals 50 and over are only charged $30.

Brian L. Winters, of Columbia Falls, Mont., died Sept. 22, 2013. Born Jan. 16, 1968, he was 45 years old.

A state appropriation passed during the last legislative budget session has allotted $488,880 to Castle Rock for street improvements after the city’s option for a Public Works Trust Fund (PWTF) loan was eliminated.

The appropriation (officially $504,000, but accounting for a three-percent administrative fee to the state) was announced during the Sept. 23 Castle Rock City Council meeting, with State Representative Ed Orcutt in attendance to be recognized for his role in proposing the appropriation.

A much-anticipated gazebo was assembled over the weekend at the Toledo boat launch with officials expecting to hold a grand opening as soon as the weather improves.

The 18' x 18' log structure had been engineered and pre-fabricated by Frontier Log and Timber Homes, of Shelton, after the city commissioned the project in June. The cost of the gazebo ($14,000) had been covered by a $67,000 grant awarded to the city last year by Tacoma Power for improvements to public facilities along the Upper Cowlitz River.

Winlock City Council held a workshop Sept. 23 before the regularly scheduled meeting to iron out details on Ordinance 985, which would regulate collective medical marijuana gardens within the city boundaries.

Separate from Ordinance 1008 passed Sept. 9, temporarily prohibiting recreational marijuana production and sales, this ordinance addresses strict requirements concerning the location, security measures, and age for the establishment of collective gardens, similar to State Liquor Control Board guidelines.

Winlock PTSA President Ann Rupert was granted permission by the Winlock City Council to set up a Halloween treat table in Volunteer Park again this year during the Sept. 23 meeting.

Council member Barbara Pedersen posed the question of high school students fulfilling their 40 hours of community service— required for graduation—by cleaning up the city’s skate park. City Attorney Mark Scheibmeir cautioned that maintenance typically done by city employees may violate terms established by collective bargaining, but Public Works Superintendent Gregg Robinson agreed "trash removal is fine, as long as no machinery is involved."

Traveling to the coast to play in the rain and mud becomes a lot more fun when you win like the Indians did in Ilwaco in Trico League play on Friday night.

Taylor Hicks scored three touchdowns and totaled 106 yards of rushing for a stout Indian offensive attack. Kreed Askin ran 11 times for 88 yards while Mason Gaul also gained 78 yards.

It was quite a week for Stephanie Yoder. She scored five goals and as it turns out, her team won 2-1, and 3-2 over solid Trico League competition.

On Sept. 24, Yoder scored her first goal with an assist by Michelle Gleason during a 2-1 victory over King’s Way Christian. Yoder’s second goal on Tuesday was unassisted.
