The South Bend Fire Department responded to a residential fire at 724 Dakota St. in South Bend late Sunday night (Aug. 4). The fire caused a “spot fire” on the roof of a neighbor’s house at 728 Dakota St., according to South Bend Fire Chief Alan Ashley.

Centralia College receives diesel technology donation

The Centralia College diesel technology program received a major economic boost when NC Machinery donated $10,000. The National Caterpillar Foundation indicated it will donate an equal amount.

Miles Folks, manager of the Chehalis NC Machinery plant, presented the check to college officials.

Diabetes prevention class being offered

Providence Centralia Hospital Diabetes and Nutrition Center and the Providence Boldt Diabetes Center are accepting applications for a 16-week program starting Sept. 11 to help those at risk for diabetes to avoid or delay developing the disease.

"Type 2 diabetes is one of the fastest growing diagnosis in the U.S. and in our area," said Linda Gooding, Registered Dietitian and Certified Diabetes Educator from the Providence Boldt Diabetes Center. "This class will help those at risk for Type 2 diabetes lose weight through healthy eating and physical activity."

Fox Theater to show American Graffiti

The Historic Fox Theater will be screening 1970s classic American Gtaffiti Aug. 24 with two showings at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Also, join the excitement in downtown Centralia for the Lewis County Quarter Milers' Hub City Car Show from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The film is presented by the Centralia-Chehalis Chamber of Commerce and Historic Fox Theatre Restorations. Pre-sale tickets are available at Debbie's Boutique, HUBBUB, Holley's Place, and Santa Lucia in Centralia and Book 'n' Brush in Chehalis. Tickets are $7 for Members, $8 for individuals or $20 for a family of 3-4 persons.

Rigsby, Phillips Headline 29th Mt. St. Helens Bluegrass Festival

General Cotheren was still sweating the financial side of the 29th Mount St. Helens Bluegrass Festival on Friday. The event was held on the grounds of Toledo High School over the weekend, but the rest of the audience was more than satisfied with the product and experience on stage and among the oaks.

"I am still hoping for a big crowd on Saturday night," Cotheren said as he gazed at Friday night's audience numbering in the early hundreds.

Toledo resident pays it forward after anonymous act of kindness

Jade Hill and Derrick Watts were astonished Aug. 2 at the Toledo’s Red Apple Market by an anonymous act of generosity. Recovering their composure, they "paid it forward" to the patron in line behind them.

Coming up short at the checkout counter, Jade selected a couple items to return but was informed by the clerk, "It's paid for."

Activity leading up to the Aug. 23 and 24 Garage Sale Weekend is obvious all over town. The Map of home sales is growing daily – call me to add your address. Meanwhile, the ladies are working hard at Pioneer Hall for the big Women’s Club sale. Donations of clean, working and saleable items are gladly accepted at this time. It’s that time of year again. Yup, the new school year is all set to start next month! As an aunt, I am very much looking forward to this event. A few local sports teams are just as eager to get everything organized. So…

Youth Football is currently signing up kids from 3rd through 6th grade. Since the season officially starts on Sept 7, and they’re hoping to have 10 practices in by then, you cannot sign up too quickly. The cost is $50 per child. Contact Mike Landry at (360) 785-4143 for details.

Free sewer plants a reality, says Blue Array

Blue Array, the company which has been testing its portable sewage treatment technology in Vader since the end of last summer, has concluded their system not only works but could be inexpensive enough to offer to cities for free.

Co-owner James Reilly says the last several months have allowed his company to learn the portable systems, housed in shipping containers, are around one quarter the cost of original estimates to fabricate (roughly $400,000 rather than $2 million) and far less complex to maintain than expected.

The Toledo City Council is reviewing their utility billing policies after hearing a complaint from a property owner who says he is being charged for services the city is not rendering.

Local property owner Roger Johnigk submitted a formal complaint to the council during their Aug. 5 meeting with legal representative Jim Nelson stating the city is billing Johnigk the equivalent of nine hookups for his apartment complex at 550 N 5th St. when only two water meters physically service the building.

A Winlock reserve officer has been hospitalized after a motorcycle collision near Chehalis Aug. 7, according to the Washington State Patrol.

Officer Randy Steger, 29, had been traveling westbound on SR 6, west of Chehalis, on a 2007 Harley Davidson when he attempted to pass a 1984 Chevrolet pickup that had slowed to make a left-hand turn. Steger struck the driver’s side of the truck, suffering a laceration to his foot, though neither the 22-year-old driver of the truck nor the 20-year-old passenger, both of Centralia, were injured.

DUI enforcement patrols coming up

DUI is the leading cause of death on Washington roadways, accountable for nearly half of the 439 fatalities on our roads during 2012.

That’s why, between Aug. 16 and Sept. 2, extra officers will be looking for drivers under the influence of alcohol, marijuana and other drugs during the annual Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign.

Volunteer EMTs sought at local agencies; training course to begin this fall

In less than a month, Centralia College will be accepting enrollment into their EMT training program and only a limited number of spots are available.

Potential students must be at least 18, will need to have the sponsorship of a local emergency response agency, a high school diploma or equivalent, a valid driver’s license and a score of more than 80 on a COMPASS Reading Test. Those who do qualify will need to be at the school’s Technology Building Friday, Sept. 6, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. to register for one of the 20 slots available for the course, which begins Oct. 8 and runs through Jan. 23.
