SOUTH BEND – Mattias J. Ganino, 30, entered a guilty plea to first degree child molestation in Pacific County Superior Court June 7. Ganino's plea will result in a sentence of 5 years and 2 months to life in prison.

Raymond HS Head Boys’ Basketball Coach Mike Tully has resigned from his position after seven years at the helm. Tully turned in his resignation last Wednesday after he was given the option to step down after meeting with school officials June 7.

The 77^th annual Egg Days festival is scheduled to take place this Friday, Saturday and Sunday in Winlock with a forecast of clear skies and fun family entertainment.

With the theme of “The Great Eggscape,” organizers have planned for a carnival by the elementary school, vendors to be available throughout downtown and the annual parade on First St. Many of the festivities are free to attend and individuals from all over the area are welcome to participate.

Students with Winlock High School have donated a new trophy case to the Egg Day Committee so they can display the many trophies won at area parades by the Egg Day carriage.

On display at City Hall for the indefinite future, the case was crafted out of Alder wood by students under instructor Ryan LaFontaine and had been commissioned by committee members earlier in the year.

The Cowlitz Prairie Grange is starting a Junior Grange program and students 5 - 14 years old are welcome to participate along with a parent.

Interested parties are encouraged to attend an organizational meeting at the Grange Hall July 6 at 11 a.m. (address: 5184 Jackson Highway). Coffee, punch and cookies will be provided.

As summer approaches and school lets out, many local residents are considering a boating excursion or two in the coming months. But increased water traffic will bring increased chances for boating accidents as well as encounters with law enforcement. Before you plan to hit the lakes and rivers, be sure you are up to speed on state boating regulations and expectations.

Make sure you have your boating license. Otherwise known as a boater education card, this document is needed for the legal operation of any watercraft with a horsepower of 15 or greater and may be obtained online. The cost for the license is $29.50, payable after you pass a boating safety exam, but will last your entire lifetime. If you do not want to wait the normal six weeks for your license after completing the exam, you can print off a copy for an additional $10.50 in fees.

Winlock-Miller Elementary School (WMES) P.E. Teacher Kathy Kinnemen stepped in front of about 200 WMES students and parents and led the chant "We Love Mr. Swan." 

WMES Principal Jim Swan, in his 21st and final year as the leader at the school, stepped to the microphone: "And Mr. Swan loves you".

This week marks two significant “sky” events: The first day of Summer occurs on Thursday, followed by a super-“Supermoon” at 4:30 a.m. on Sunday. “Supermoons” happen when the Moon is nearest to the Earth while aligned with the Sun - or I think that’s what the article said…They can occur 4-6 times a year and this one will be the closest/largest/brightest Full Moon for a 2-year period ending August 2014. Even with Ryderwood’s streetlights, there are places where the view of the night sky is spectacular – on a clear night…

The weekend has a few things on the schedule including Acoustic Saturday Night on – you guessed it – Saturday night. That’s at 7 p.m. in the Café. Bring your music makers and join in the “Open Mic” or enjoy being a member of the audience. This publication covered a recent evening of fun.

It is finally that time of the year, people! Yes, Egg Day Weekend is all set for June 21, 22, and 23. There’s an awful lot planned for it, including the Egg Day Queen coronation for Friday at 7 p.m., a car show on Saturday, a carnival the whole weekend, and, of course, the parade. The parade starts moving on Saturday at 11 a.m., and I’m definitely looking forward to it. I’ll even be riding the float for the Hope Grange…don’t ask me how that came about.

But wait, there’s more! The Olequa Senior Center will be serving All-You-Can-Eat-Pancakes Saturday from 7:30 to 10 a.m. for $5. Ham, eggs, orange juice, and coffee will also be available. 

Aili Hilliard, of Winlock, died June 9, 2013. Born Nov. 20, 1921, she was 91 years old.

She was preceded in death by husband Arthur Gowin, husband Jack Hilliard, her parents, and brother Leo Havana. She is survived by sons Dennis Hilliard and John Hilliard; sister-in-law Lorraine Havana; grandchildren Gina (John) Rabung, Jeffrey Tellevik, Matthew (Danielle) Tellevik, Jillian Reilly, Jake Hilliard and Tara Lynn; and eight great-grandchildren.

Robert “Bob” Rogers, of Onalaska, died June 11, 2013. Born July 24, 1924, he as 88 years old.

He is survived by daughters Amy and Valerie, sons Glen and Michael, and grandchildren Erin, Jessica and Joshua.

Sara M. Faas, of Napavine, died June 2, 2013. Born May 2, 1936, she was 77 years old.

The Lewis County Department of Public Health & Social Services reported Monday they are in the process of clearing up a local property littered with hulk vehicles and other debris after experiencing a lack of cooperation with the property owner.

Under the authority of Lewis County Superior Court, the county has abated (seized for the purpose of debt collection) a 2.14-acre property at 4020 Harrison Ave., north of Centralia, and have hired a contractor to remove debris and sell whatever materials can be recycled.

While Lewis County District 20 may have lost their ambulance transportation license earlier this month, officials would like local residents to know they have not lost their ambulance service, nor the capacity to transport patients to the hospital.

During Thursday’s June meeting of the District 20 Board of Commissioners, District Chief Rich Underdahl said transportation services will still be available through Lewis County Medic One while current staff and vehicles will be able to assist non-transportation emergencies.

Local law enforcement agencies are now 17 officers stronger after cadets with the 2013 Police Reserve Academy graduated in a ceremony held at Winlock Miller Elementary School Friday.

Academy Commander and Winlock Police Chief Terry Williams presented officers sponsored by police departments from Morton, Centralia, Tenino, Winlock, and the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office to a crowd of family, friends and well-wishers in the grade school gym that night. Williams said the men he and fellow law enforcement professionals had trained showed a "genuine compassion" for the people they were seeking to protect, stating it had been his pleasure to serve as their commander.

Steven J. Clokey, 42, of Winlock, is wanted by Lewis County District Court on a no-bail warrant after to appear for a charge of driving while license suspended, third degree.
