The Raymond Post Office has been the talk of the town after a wacky incident unfolded near Garden Tracts in Raymond. A local postal carrier found herself in a predicament after a crash closed a section of State Route 6. Anyone passing by the area at the time observed that her postal vehicle had its flashers on and was stopped next to two Washington State Patrol vehicles.
Postmaster gets a scare
According to Postmaster Kim Crawford, the word quickly got around when she stated, "we got a few calls and I have to admit my heart stopped for a minute. I got out there pretty quickly and by the time I was there, everyone was gone. But I did see a vehicle parked in someone's driveway that did have some damage."
Crawford went on to explain that the USPS worker was simply stuck in the wrong place at the wrong time. "The road was closed and after a little while, she said she asked the Troopers if she could get through," she said. "She said she explained to him where she was trying to get to and it was the next section of her route. They let her through and she went on with her route."
She continued, "Mary is one of our older workers and we all love her so I was really worried about her when I realized where it was at. But If something had happened that involved us [USPS] Washington State Patrol would have notified me sooner. But I was still worried, especially with the accident that happened up north yesterday."
Eerie coincidence
The day before the bad timing in Raymond, a USPS worker from another post office was involved in a fatal accident north of Seattle. Which added to the stress level for Crawford before she was able to sort the details out. "It was fresh in my mind," she said. "Thankfully, it wasn't any of us and Mary was okay. Once I got ahold of her my mind eased."
What really happened
Details of the actual accident are scarce, but according to Washington State Patrol Sgt. Bradford Moon a black Ford Mustang was struck by another vehicle in a hit and run accident around 1:09 p.m. on Wednesday, January 23. The vehicle then is believed to have fled the scene in an unknown direction. The victim of the accident wasn't able to give Troopers very much information about the accident or the suspects' vehicle. The accident remains under investigation by the Washington State Patrol. Sgt. Moon was able to affirm the USPS was not involved in the crash. No further details were available.
