Republican Rally.

Arrangements have been made for holding a Republican rally at Lebam tonight and at Francis tomorrow night. Local candidates will speak and the Republican quartets will sing some new campaign songs. This will be the first of several rallies to be held at different places in the county.

To discuss cannery plans

Claus Peterson, the Mill Creek poultryman, was in town Wednesday. Mr. Peterson reports that a special meeting has been called for 2pm Sunday afternoon, in the West Union Grange Hall at Camp One, to discuss plans for the organization of a cooperative company to establish a fruit and vegetable cannery in the valley. Mr. Peterson is strongly in favor of some such move being made, and believes it would greatly encourage the growing of small fruits and vegetables, and be the means of promoting a new prosperity among the farmers.

Scuba diver finds boat and trailer

A pickup truck and a trailer with boat disappeared into the Willapa River at the old Willapa boat landing Sunday afternoon, and it took some searching to find them.

Greg Caldwell, son of Mrs. Lois Oldanim 1119 Duryea St., a scuba diver, was injured slightly while diving to locate the missing vehicles. The trailer was located and pulled out Monday. The truck was retrieved on Tuesday.

The truck apparently rolled off some blocks to take it's dive into the Willapa.

School census up 73 over last year. Total enrollment of school children in Pacific County stands at 3,741, 73 more than last year, according to figures released this week by County Superintendent of Schools Neil Bailey.

Enrollment is 150 at Ocean Park, 73 at Bay Center, 183 at Long Beach, 48 at Chinook, 20 at Tokeland and 392 at Ilwaco.

More Valley schoolrooms?

Willapa Valley school board members heard plans to deal with future growth and concerns about current crowding at their meeting Monday.

Superintendent Lafe Bretthauer recommended adding new school rooms to the elementary school, put a new roof on the high school, and do interior remodeling there. A "very rough" guesstimate on cost was $375,000, he said.

Hospital committee begins study of "mission"

"Change is coming. We've got to embraced that change."

With those words, Willapa Harbor Hospital Administrator Victer Vander Does described the reason more than 20 persons gathered Thursday to begin shaping the long- range goals of the South Bend hospital.

The group comprises the Strategic Planning Committee, and all three hospital commissioners, Pat Millican, Fred Hill and F.E. "Mac" McMullen, stressed that community input was vital. "It's not our hospital, it's your hospital," said Mrs. Millican said. "Your opinion counts."
