As they say, “April showers bring May flowers.” I can’t wait to see all the flowers here in the country. There is nothing more beautiful than taking a drive around Winlock to see all the gardens take their shape.
Of course, what would the month of May be without talking about “May Day” and how it started. May Day began as an ancient Northern Hemisphere spring festival, this is said to have taken place before Christian times. May Day is best known for the tradition of dancing the maypole dance and crowning of the Queen of May.
One of the traditions of May Day that has been lost is “May baskets”. I remember making “May baskets”, made out of paper and filled with sweet smelling, full blossomed flowers. Then, we would anonymously ring our friend’s doors and run off, laughing the entire way until we were out of sight. Most of the fun was seeing the neighbors come out and look for whoever dropped off those colorful and fragrant baskets; they would look high then low but we were hiding (Except our non-stop giggling). They always made our neighbors smile but the smile and memories it gave to us is something I will never forget. Wouldn’t it be fun to start the tradition back up with your children or grandchildren? Put a smile on your friends or neighbors faces, straight from your own garden or field. Thanks Mom for keeping the tradition alive with us!
Since it is May and Vader May Day is right around the corner, let’s remember to help our neighbors to the South, Vader celebrates their tradition of May Day this Saturday. Please support Vader and the century’s old tradition of celebrating May Day.
