Egg Day is coming in just a few months and boy do we enjoy our Egg Days. I thought it was time to give a little history lesson on the egg as well. I always enjoyed being from the town of the Worlds Largest Egg. One Day I was in the Denver Airport and some of the people I worked with knew I was from Winlock and proud of it. Next thing I know they are running up to me telling me to come see this map, of course I was thinking “What is so important about this map?” Little did I know there in the Denver Airport was a big egg next to Winlock and it said “Worlds Largest Egg”. There were only two important mentions on the map, the Washington Apple and our big egg… I was beaming, I was proud, I was from Winlock!!!
The Winlock Egg is 12 feet long and weighs 1,200 lbs, it sits on a 10 foot steel pole. How the Egg came about is the town boosters knew that Winlock was the second largest egg producer in the United States and decided to claim their fame. In 1923 the town boosters built the first “Worlds Largest Egg”. In 1944 a plastic version was made then in the 1960’s the egg was updated to fiberglass. Finally, the egg was replaced for the last time around 1993. In 2001 Winlock painted the American flag on the egg, to show their support of 9/11. The egg is the symbol of a community that is very patriotic and of one that loves their egg salad sandwiches!!
