As they fight for a district tournament seed, the Winlock boys basketball team faced two of their closest competition and split in Central 2B League play.
On Wednesday night, Cory McNelly missed a three-point shot to tie the game and Napavine escaped with a 41-38 victory. Enrique Hernandez led the Cardinals with 14 points. The two teams have nearly identical records, but Napavine is looking at a much more manageable schedule.
On Friday, the Cardinals dropped Toutle Lake 45-40 in Central League competition. Caleb Rose hit a six-footer and two free throws while Enrique Hernandez coolly dropped in two more free throws. Skyler Tremayne hit a key three-pointer with 1:37 to go and gave the Cardinals the lead for the first time all night.
"I felt like it was a great team win," said Rose. "Especially since it was the first time we kept someone under 40, which was one of our goals for the season."
Winlock held the Ducks to just 21 points in the second half with suffocating, often full-court defense.
Hernandez, Mike Blum and Chance Fisher all had five rebounds while Hernandez also had five assists and 16 points.
Winlock is now 6-10 on the season and 5-9 in the Central 2B League and will host Onalaska on Wednesday for Senior Night. They will bid farewell to Hernandez, Blum, McNelly, Ben Martin, Tyler Whitehead, and Logan Hull. They will finish out the season with a Friday match-up at Morton/White Pass and then at home with Pe Ell on Saturday.
