The Vader Lions Club is on the lookout for new members to help bolster their community outreach efforts. Becoming active once again this September, those interested in joining may call Lois Wilson at (360) 295-3002.
Volunteers are being sought to help with next week's National Day of Service projects, and those with weed-eating equipment are being encouraged to participate. Organizers have shared they will be focusing on eliminating knotweed growing along Olequa Creek in McMurphy Park. If enough volunteers sign up, there will also be projects to trim overgrowth from around the city streets. The event takes place Saturday, Sept. 13, from 8 a.m. to noon, with word of free breakfast beforehand at the Vader Assembly of God Church. For more information, including how to volunteer, call City Hall at (360) 295-3222.
Next week will also feature a public hearing regarding a temporary ban against recreational marijuana businesses in town, and the public is invited to give their written or verbal testimony in the matter. Scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 10, at 6:30 p.m. in City Hall, the hearing will center around a temporary ban renewed in July, and residents are encouraged to share how they would like to see the city regulate or disallow such businesses on a more permanent basis. For more info, including available accommodations, call City Hall.
Also in city business, Vader has been awarded by the Risk Management Services Agency for having filed no insurance claims for 2013, a feat they were also honored for during the previous year. "Two years is now setting a record," remarked Mayor Ken Smith of the award. "I'm very proud of that."
And don't forget that the regular City Council meetings are now taking place at 6 p.m. rather than 6:30 p.m. the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month. This change was made by the council in August as a means to better accommodate the schedules of officials attending the meeting.
The Vader Assembly of God Church will be opening their food bank Tuesday, Sept. 9, starting at 10 a.m. Their next food bank opening will be on Sept. 23. For more information, call (360) 295-3756.
