Until just a few minutes before writing this column, the biggest news in Vader was the cancellation of May Day due to a lack of organizers for the event. However, the tough appear to have got going and it turns out May Day 2014 is still on through the efforts of coordinators Janet Charlton and Judy Costello, as well as a number of volunteers. The theme this year is "A Blooming Good Time in Vader" and the festival, complete with a parade, carnival games and other attractions, is still scheduled for May 3. We’re all very grateful to Charlton, Costello and all the volunteers who make May Day—and Vader itself—happen. For more May Day information, contact Charlton at (360) 295-3011, and to sign up as a vendor contact Costello at (360) 295-3036.
The Vader Park Board is holding a flower basket fundraiser to help with ongoing parks projects and activities. With pre-orders available now through May 3, 12” hanging petunia baskets are available for $25 each and the purchaser can choose from a variety of options. For information or to place an order, call Lois Wilson at (360) 295-3002 or Doug Clevenger at (360) 304-2412.
For those concerned about being available in the evenings for the upcoming sewer system workshops hosted by the Department of Commerce, City Hall says notes from the meetings are being made available to the public, which contain all of the details presented during the meetings. The first workshop was held March 21 and notes from that meeting are currently available. The next workshop is scheduled for April 18 from 1-3 p.m. and those unable to attend can acquire notes through City Hall as well. For information, call (360) 295-3222.
It’s never too early to get started on your plans for the Vader Gravity Races. Scheduled this year to coincide with Vader’s Fourth of July celebration, the downhill derby is expected to see an even bigger turnout of spectators and participants, as well as vendors and other performances. To learn more about entering the race, call coordinator Kevin Flynn at (360) 295-0873.
