6/12/16 - 1/8/13
Long time Raymond resident, Sylvia Kalla, 96, quietly passed away on January 8, 2013, at the adult family care home in Olympia, where she had resided for the past three years. Sylvia was born in Raymond on June 12, 1916 to Frank and Mary Stenrose. She grew up in Raymond and graduated from Raymond High School in 1934.
Sylvia met her husband, Rudy Kalla, in Raymond, and they were married in a ceremony in Aberdeen on December 30, 1939. After marriage, the couple lived in several western Washington cities including Seattle, Bremerton and Rainier, before moving back to Raymond where Sylvia resided for the next 55 years. Rudy passed away in 1993.
Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents; her sister Sadie; husband Rudy and a grandson, Christopher.
Sylvia is survived by her two children and their spouses, Richard (Pat) and Sandra (Gary); five grandchildren, Karen (Charles), Elissa, Kevin, Justin and Tim (Kristin), and two great grandchildren, Reidar and Adam.
Sylvia was the consummate homemaker. She was a wonderful cook and her kitchen was always filled with terrific smells and treats. After her son and daughter grew up and left home, Sylvia worked for a while and then became active in the Lutheran Church and Ladies Aid, where she enjoyed making quilts for the needy. She was undoubtedly one of the nicest people you could ever meet. Her circle of friends was extensive and everyone who met her instantly loved her. Her caregivers in later life remarked on her constant good spirits and concern for others, despite her condition. She was simply a joy to be around. The world will be a little less sunny now that she has gone. Loving, kind, a true friend, she was the heart of our family and will always be in our hearts.
Sylvia will be interred next to Rudy at the Fern Hill Cemetery in Menlo in a private ceremony at a later date.
