The South Bend City Council met on Monday, Dec. 12. On the agenda for the meeting was the interview for the applicant for Council Position #1.
The council members interviewed the applicant and then went into an executive session to discuss the interview. Each council member had two questions prepared that they asked the applicant.
South Bend resident Wyatt Kuiken had applied for Council Position #1, and was asked how he thought a council member should conduct themselves on social media.
"I think first of all you have to realize you are in the view of the public and so you have to represent yourself well and ... you have to keep those things to a [minimum] and keep them appropriate," said Kuiken.
The next question Kuiken was asked was why he decided to apply for the position. Kuiken responded by saying that he's been living here for six years and has been involved in the community since then.
"It's a great community and I like to be a part of it, and l'd like to be able to go a bit further and help out our community in the best way I can," he said.
Kuiken was asked other questions, such as what experiences he has with city government and Kuiken cited jobs that involved working with the school system and working with budgets. He also mentioned he currently sits on South Bend's Planning Commission.
After holding an executive session discussion, the council declared Kuiken the next council member, and swore him in.
The council also dealt with an ordinance pertaining to the 2016 budget amendments, which the council passed after special permission for just one reading was granted to a request made by Clerk Treasurer Dee Roberts.
The next South Bend City Council will be held Monday, January 9.
