Sheaffer: Connecting Clients and Caregivers

Let's talk about finding a caregiver.

I know we've talked a lot about caregivers in this space, and will continue to do so because sometimes people need help getting through the day, and the need is not decreasing.

We've noted that in-home care agencies are working diligently in our area. We've also discussed how to hire private-pay individuals and referenced our booklet, appropriately titled How to Hire In-Home Help.

This time out, I want to focus a bit more on Medicaid clients and caregivers--and how said client and caregiver might connect.

Welcome to the Home Care Referral Registry (HCRR).

HCRR is a Washington State web-based tool that helps connect an individual needing assistance with personal care tasks while in the home, to an IP who is able to meet that need. The IP would complete an application to have their name and information placed on the registry, including availability, training, personal care tasks they're willing and able to do, etc.

Also, information regarding what environment they can work in. For example, some are unable to work in a home where smoking occurs. Others may be hesitant to work in a home where large--or I suppose even tiny--dogs are inside.

On the flip side, the client may not be able to work with an IP who smokes, uses perfume/cologne, and so on. Like mentioned earlier, it's all about making a working connection between client and caregiver. And, the client has the assurance that IP's on the registry have been screened and are checked regarding current training.

The first step is to call either of the numbers at the end of this column and request a Registry Application Packet. When completed, it will go to our registry staff for Pacific County.

The registry database takes in the information and generates a list of IP's who best match the client's needs and preferences. The client is provided the list and, as the employer, will interview and hire the best fit.

Remember, as noted at the beginning, this is for Medicaid clients and Medicaid clients only.

Connections that benefit both client and caregiver--sounds like a plan.
