Senior Centers hosting fun for local seniors

Winlock seniors attending a class by the Winlock Dance Center's Robin Brumley.

The Toledo and Winlock Senior Centers are up and running at full speed. Since they opened, Tess and Nicole have been busy creating new classes and scheduling fun for everyone.

From Tess at the Toledo Senior Center:

We are back open and ready to hit the ground running. We look forward to seeing you back. Come in and join us.

Our pancake breakfast is back also. We hold it on the second Saturday each month. The cost is $7 for all you can-eat-pancakes, breakfast meat and eggs. Or you can get biscuits and gravy with eggs (not all you can eat). This is a fundraiser for our center.

The pool players are here every day starting at 9:00 a.m.

On Mondays we serve an Enrichment Meal (Cooks Choice) for $6 at 12:00 p.m. Pinochle and woodcarving run from 12:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

On Tuesdays we have sweet treats starting at 9:00 a.m. From 9:00 a.m. to 12:30p.m. an oil/acrylic class meets as does a stitchery group(this group meets around 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

On Wednesday and Friday, we serve Enrichment Lunches for a donation of $3 to $5. Check the Senior Dynamics for the meals being served or come in and pick up a menu for the month. Bingo is also played both days.

On Thursday quilters meet at 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

We are always looking for new ideas. Come in and help us.

Volunteers are also needed, especially for the pancake breakfasts.

It is so wonderful to have everyone back in the center, doing the things they love.

From Nicole at the Olequa Senior Center:

One big activity to be noted is the Mexican Train on the second Friday of the month, this will happen monthly going forward.

On the last Friday of the month is the Waffle Bar, a reoccurring event where the menu changes.

We are also working on adding a quilt group. We want to build a community quilt to enter in the fair and then raffle off to benefit the Winlock-Olequa Senior Center.

Monday and Friday lunches remain at $5 (these are public all ages meals). Nutrition lunches are on Tuesday and Thursday for a suggested donation of $3 to $5.

We do have frozen nutrition meals for those who need them, and they can be picked up any day, max of seven meals a week per person (this includes any hot meals eaten or taken to go).

To go meals are available for every hot meal (please call ahead for these so that I can reserve the food).

The center is available for rentals in the evenings and on weekends. With graduation coming up soon, the calendar is filling up fast, call now to book your spots.

Also I am going to be putting out a call soon for volunteer sign ups for both Egg Days breakfast and for STP dinner and breakfast crews, this will need to be in advance to ensure everyone has food handler's cards and that my staffing needs are met.

Another event on Tuesday and Thursday at the Olequa Senior Center is the Winlock Dance Studio's Robin Brumley teaching two classes a week. On Tuesday at 10:00 a.m., Robin is teaching a dance based cardio workout. Thursday's at 10:00 a.m. is the basic workout and light stretching. Each class is only $10.

We are rapidly growing and love seeing all the new faces coming into the center. I hope to see more of the community joining us in the near future. The center is here so that we can support our seniors.

The two south county senior center site managers have been working hard to bring you what you want. If you have any ideas, they would love to hear them. The senior centers are where the happenings are in the city around lunch time. Stop in and have a great meal with a little fun.
