This is my last opportunity to invite readers to come out to Ryderwood on Thursday at 2 p.m. to watch the 1926 silent movie about the Long-Bell Lumber Company, the owner and developer of Longview and Ryderwood. As part of the AMVETS Ryderwood History Project, the movie will be shown in the Auditorium of Community Hall. In 1926, Ryderwood's "world's largest logging crew" provided the timber for Longview's "world's largest sawmill". At the time, all systems were very "high tech".
Three panel members will narrate and be available to discuss the film: Jim Tweedie, author (The Long-Bell Story, 2014) and mill specialist; Jim LeMonds, author (Deadfall, 2000) and historian; Larry French, retired logger, Ryderwood resident. The Social Club following the film will serve light refreshments. All are welcome to attend.
Friday night's Dinner at the Café, brought to you by the Ryderwood Social Club, will be Patti's Lasagna. Served at 5 p.m., the Dinners include beverage, salad, side dishes and dessert - a bargain for $10. Call Linda at 295-0875 by Wednesday to make reservations.
Ryderwood is home to two veterans organizations, VFW Post #7010 and AMVETS Post #7010. There are more than 60 members between the two groups - some vets belong to both. They do an incredible amount of good work for our town and its veterans. They hold their monthly meetings on the 4th Mondays in Community Hall: AMVETS meet at 11 and the VFW at 11:30. These are the guys who do the monthly Town Breakfast (1st Saturdays) plus the cooking at all of the community's events.
Game Night is being moved from the 4th Saturday to the 4th Monday, which I think will happen this weekend, though I'm not certain.
The Senior Lunch menu on Tuesday the 26th will be Chicken Chili with Cornbread, Carrot-Apple Salad and Sliced Peaches. That's quite a meal deal for a bargain price: $3 if over 60, $5 for others. The meal is served at noon in Community Hall's Dining Room. Please call 295-3813 by 3 p.m. on Monday to make or break reservations.
I'm pleased to report that the Living Well with Chronic Conditions Workshop has a full class and there is a waiting list for a future class possibly in the Spring.
Anyone wishing to participate in the next workshop should call (360) 577-4929 to pre-register. Feedback from participants has been very positive.
Reminders: Long-Bell movie at 2 p.m. on Thursday the 21st; Castle Rock School band and choral concert, Monday February 1st at 6:30 p.m.
