Pascal House, Portrait of Unconventional Athlete

Toledo Senior Pascal House being introduced on winter sports senior night at Toledo High School.

To look at Toledo High School Senior Pascal House, one would think that he has to be an incredible athlete. The truth is, House is the beat for several bands rather than banging pads on the football field or pinning opponents on the wrestling mats.

House was making noise as a talented wrestler as a freshman, but a car accident in October, 2011, put the brakes on what might have been a glorious high school wrestling career.

"I got into my first car accident and was unable to participate in wrestling, my favorite sport, the following year due to a shoulder and back injury," said House.

He filled his down time with non-athletic pursuits.

"I started getting really into car projects which forced me to get a job to keep them going," explained House. "I didn't have time for sports."

"Sports are pretty important to me so I tried making time for track and field", he recalled.

This last fall he also tried his hand at football but found experience is an important component no matter how athletic you might be.

"I decided to give football a go. Everyone always wanted me to do it, so I was convinced," he explained. "I wouldn't say I was very good. It was my first year, but thanks to my team and coach, football was a blast."

Where House has really made his name however is as a musician.

“Music has always come first to me before cars or sports," grins House. “I chose to skip out on football and basketball so I could play the drums during pep band.”

He has also been working on potential contacts as a professional, or semi-professional drummer.

“I've been in several bands since I've started drumming, but right now I am just concentrating on getting graduation out of the way,” he said.

House says that he will spend his first year after high school at Centralia College and then transfer to Clover Park to join the surgical technician program.

House's talent and charisma spilled over a few weeks ago as the winner of the annual Mr. T Pageant at Toledo High School. The competition is a satirical, often hilarious event that features true talent at times.

"Life without sarcasm is boring in my eyes," said a snarky House. "So Mr. T was the perfect game for me."

“Winning the Mr. T pageant, it felt awesome. I really did not go out there expecting to win," House said. “I sometimes have a hard time keeping it appropriate for school and public, thanks to the household I grew up in," he said of his sometimes-colorful background. “I have always found it easy to take advantage of my curvy body with my one chest hair mixed with the occasional stiff dance move to make people laugh,"

Besides music and cars, House has found one other thing that is very important to him. "One thing I do my best to take serious is the Big Brother Big Sister program I participate in," says House. "I have been spending an hour a week with my little buddy for the past two school years. Some kids just need a bigger kid to look up to once in a while when they have no one at home. I think it would be cool to somehow stay in touch with my little after I graduate."

House is not your traditional student athlete, but he has filled in the blanks with untraditional character, skill and personality.
