A crowd of residents were on hand for carols and snacks during a tree-lighting ceremony in Winlock on Saturday, expected to be the first of such events to be held yearly.

Organizers said they were very pleased with the showing of community support during a tree-lighting ceremony in Winlock on Saturday, which they expect will be the first in what becomes an annual local tradition.

Put together by the Winlock Lions Club, the event featured a round of popular Christmas carols led by students from the Winlock High School Choir, as well as cookies, coffee and coco provided by local volunteers.

Choir Instructor Karl Scarborough said his students were excited to be able to engage the community this way, and said he was personally glad to be able to lead local residents through classic Christmas songs.

"Families just don't do this anymore," he said of the traditional practice of caroling, "so this was really cool."

The tree itself was donated by Alpine Trees and Shrubs, located locally, and decorated by volunteers, and it is expected to remain on display at the corner of Kerron St. and Sri Chinmoy St. through Christmas.

Lions Club organizer Viola Chickese said, in years to come, they hope to continue holding the ceremony, and are already looking to next year for possible improvements.

"We want to start making this a yearly event, getting the community together," she said, stating they are already contemplating bringing in a Santa for pictures, as well as having accompaniment for the carols.
