The games that the Vikings have been playing leading up to this one all follow the same trend. The lady Vikings have been evenly matched as they went up against first Ilwaco, and then North Beach this last week. The Ilwaco game was a struggle for the Vikings but ultimately they almost tied the game up at the end. They were able to come within one point, making the score 51 to 52 in Ilwaco's favor.
The lady Vikings were able to come away from North Beach with a win, despite it being close with a score of 35 to 32.
The Onalaska girls gave the lady Vikings a run for their money right out of the gate. Onalaska's ability to drop three-pointers just about every time they got the ball down to their basket was challenging for the Vikings, and allowed Onalaska to create an uphill battle for the Vikings from the first quarter. The score was 17 to 9 going into the second quarter.
Valley adjusted accordingly to the play style of Onalaska's defense, weaving through the Onalaska defense to drive the ball into the basket while Onalaska was still able to over power the lady Vikings because they dominated the rebounds and were able to put the ball back up after gaining the rebound to score. The score at half time was closer than ever at 25 to 29 in Onalaska's favor.
Into the third quarter, the Onalaska girls fought to stay on top by draining more three pointers from far out. The lady Vikings were able to hold them off enough to keep them from scoring more than they did, but were also having trouble with fouling at this point in the game.
At 42 to 35, the game was within tying distance for the Vikings, yet Onalaska was still able to stay on top of the Vikings by way of foul shot points and three-pointers. The Onalaska girls were starting to get tired at this point and so started feeding the ball outside the key yet again, and it seemed the Vikings could not figure what to do about the three pointers. The game ended with a score of 52 to 47 in Onalaska's favor.
The lady Vikings will play the South Bend Indians on Wednesday, February 11 in Rochester.
