Commissioners Frank Wolfe and Steve Rogers clarified a mistake regarding ATV laws quoted in the Herald from last month’s meeting. Wolfe and Rogers pointed out that ATVs are currently not allowed to be driven on roads, but new laws may bring changes allowing them to be driven on county roads under 35 mph.
“We are having a series of county meetings and we will be taking testimony from people who are in favor of our against [new ATV laws],” Commissioner Rogers explained. “It should be noted that there is a significant number of people who are not in favor of this.” The meetings regarding the new ATV laws will be scheduled soon.
The Department of Public Works was approved to advertise a vacant position of Administrative Assistant II. The Auditor’s Office was authorized to advertise a vacant position of Administrative Assistant I.
The proposal to prepare a draft and final Shoreline Master Program plan (SMP) was approved by the Board. The SMP was also approved to create a committee of public citizens for as a planning committee, as recommended by the Department of Community Development.
A request for qualifications was passed to assist a Community Health Needs Assessment. Eventually a county-wide Community Health Improvement Plan will result from the assessment, which will be grant funded.
The Board passed a consent lease agreement with Westcoast Hardwoods. The company will be allowed to process its logs at the mill, which the County owns. This agreement will keep the mill running and create jobs.
Resignations approved by the Board included Zoe Sowa of the Prosecutor’s Office and Tracey Deckert of the Auditor’s Office. Dakota Phillips was hired to lead the Spartina Field Crew I from July through September and Laurie Bowman was appointed as “involved in activity-user” on the Lodging Tax Advisory Committee.
