Dear Editor;
Before Vini Samuel had ever stepped foot on the Harbor, she knew it well.
As a student at Western Washington University, she worked on a massive study on Grays Harbor, combing through old newspaper files to study the people, culture and economics of the region. She never figured she'd actually live here.
But her whole life seems to have prepared her for not just moving to Grays Harbor, but moving to Montesano, raising a family here and starting a small business.
When Vini was 6 years old, her family immigrated to the United States. Her father had been a teacher in India, but found himself doing remedial jobs to earn a living for his family, which included Vini's mother and sister. Her family worked hard to earn a living and taught Vini the meaning of hard work.
She served on the Montesano City Council for eight years. During that time, she restarted the Festival of People and rewrote the city's development codes, with reforms such as sidewalks for new construction.
After seeing the divisiveness in Montesano, she decided to throw her hat in the ring for mayor.
On a local radio show, a caller asked her why she was doing this. Her response was simple: Because she loves Montesano. There's no other reason than that.
Vini is a person of principle and integrity. As a longtime business owner and attorney fighting for the most vulnerable, she understands details and budgets. At her core, Vini embraces accountability and transparency. As a mother and wife, she understands families and wants Montesano to be better for the next generation.
The Grays Harbor Herald has provided a fresh voice for the county. Vini will provide a fresh voice for Montesano. She will bridge the grim divide that has persisted in the city of Montesano for years.
