The Willapa Valley lady Vikings won a five-team meet hosted by South Bend April 24th. Valley scored 110 points to defeat the host Lady Indians' output of 98 points. Wahkiakum was third at 53, followed by Naselle (30) and North River (14). South Bend won the boys' meet.
““The girls continued their (winning) streak Thursday at South Bend, even though we were missing a couple key competitors due to illness,” Willapa Valley head track coach Dave Ege told the Herald.
Kate Rockett was a double winner for the Vikes by throwing the farthest in the javelin (109 feet, 2 inches) and javelin (83 feet).
Emily Sanchez also won two individual events, including the 200 meters (:28.50) and long jump (15 feet) for South Bend.
Valley went one, two in the 100-meter high hurdles with Lauren Friese (:17.70) and cousin Karli Friese (:17.80).
Valley vaulted to the top three spots in the pole vault with Alicia Smaciarz, Karli Friese and Lauren Friese all tying for first in the event that was conducted at WVHS because South Bend does not have a pole vault facility.
Valley's Dominique Kudasik was first in the 3200 with a time of 14:36.90.
Valley ninth grader Shania Barton won the high jump at 4-7.
Frosh Ashley Pearson easily won the 800 for the Tribe with a time of 2:45.80.
Another Indian ninth grader, Traci Hoffman, was first in the 1600 meters with a clocking of 6:34.30; Kudasik was second at 6:51.40.
The Lady Indians won the 800 relay with Morgan Patterson, Alison Funkhouser, Collins and Sanchez turning in a time of 1:54.40.
Kathryn Staats by far threw the shot put the farthest at 35-9. Teammate Katlyn Sawyer was third.
Tammi Kousonhsavath won the triple jump at 30-7, and teammate Brooke Spoor was second at 29-8.
Gathering three second-place efforts was Willapa Valley's Abby Hodel in the long jump, 100 and 200.
Staats was second in the javelin and Sawyer was third, and finishing fourth and fifth for the Vikings were Smaciarz and Maddy Huber.
Kristina Coty placed third for the Lady Vikes in the discus, and Karli Friese was third in the long jump.
Indians Win Going Away
South Bend scored 117 points, followed by Wahkiakum (62), Naselle (60½), Willapa Valley (46½) and North River (24) in the boys' competition.
Dennis Johnson was victorious in the long jump (19-3) and triple jump (38-11) for the Tribe; teammate Tristan Hansen was second in both events. Valley's Trevor Cook was third in the long jump.
AJ Sanchez of SBHS won the 300-meter intermediate hurdles at :48.50 and Hansen was second.
The Tribe won the 4 by 1 relay with Bucio, Juan Bucio, Jordan Dockter and Sanchez with a time of 49 flat. The same foursome also won the 1600 relay.
Winning the javelin for South Bend was Dalyn Ogilvie with a throw of 143-9; followed by Konigsberger (140-2), Case, and Jason Fluke.
Miles Davis of South Bend was first in the shot put at 40 feet, 8 inches; Valley's Drew Pearson was second at 38-2.
South Bend's Jose Bucio won the 800 meters at 2:24.20.
Matt Konigsberger of WVHS won the 400 meters with a time of :58.40.
Spencer Case tied for first in the high jump at 5-4 with Wahkiakum's Ryan Quigley. Johnson was third.
Valley was second, third and fourth in the pole vault with Cook, Jason Fluke and Dominic DeLong.
Cook placed second in the 100 meters and Sanchez was third. Case was second in the 1600 meters.
South Bend's Ryan Overstake placed third in the discus and teammate Camden Ogilvie was fourth.
Valley and South Bend competed at Ilwaco Tuesday. The Vikings head to Raymond tomorrow, while the Tribe is at Ocosta.
