South Bend’s Lady Indians defeated Northwest Christian (36-24) last Tuesday (Dec. 17) and Ocosta (58-27) last Friday at Koplitz Fieldhouse.
In the win over Christian, Katlyn Sawyer pulled down 17 rebounds, scored 11 points and sank 6 free throws in the fourth quarter. Sierra Cearns scored 10 points and Rielly Myers grabbed 10 rebounds.
“Defensively, we did a real nice job down the stretch,” said SBHS head coach Gary Wilson. “We didn’t give them a lot of good looks.”
The Indians committed 29 turnovers and the Navigators finished with 21. South Bend’s defense held NC to 21% shooting (12 of 57). The Indians shot 41% (17 of 41).
In the win over Ocosta,Cearns had a game high 14 points and Myers netted 11 points and took down 9 boards. Sawyer scored 11 and secured 8 rebounds. Edith Razo put in 12 points.
“We did a nice job of moving the ball,” Wilson said. “We got good inside and outside shots and handled their ball pressure well. We got a strong performance with four players in double figures. We attacked the ball well and it was a great overall team effort.”
Ocosta shot only 19% (12 of 64) against South Bend’s defense.
South Bend (3-2) competes at the Jack Pearson Holiday Classic at Tenoski Gym in Menlo Friday and Saturday. South Bend’s home game versus Montesano, which has been cancelled twice, has been rescheduled for January 22. The game tips off 5:45 with the boys’ varsity to follow.
