Indians beat Hyaks, clobbered by Toutle Lake

Myranda Curtis canned the winning shot and fired in 23 points to keep South Bend alive at the District IV Girls’ Basketball Tournament last Tuesday night (Feb. 12) at Montesano. Curtis drained a baseline J with 12 seconds to play to five the Lady Indians a 52-50 win over North Beach in the loser-out game. The Lady Hyaks missed a trey at the buzzer that hit the front of the rim.
Curtis led South Bend’s fourth quarter attack by scoring 19 of her teams’ 25 points. The Tribe entered the fourth quarter trailing 32-27. Curtis sank two clutch free throws to knot the game at 50 with less than a minute to play.
Makenzie Russell also turned in a big game for SBHS with 15 points and 14 rebounds.
“The win keeps us moving on,” South Bend head coach Gary Wilson told the Herald. “It was a good old-fashioned shootout in the fourth quarter. Toutle Lake is a good ball club. We’ll have to refocus. The point is to advance and we did.”
The Lady Indians dropped in 12 of 16 free throws and shot 34 percent from the floor on 19 of 55. North beach was 16 of 23 from the line and 15 of 43 (35%) from the field.
Wakeena DeLaCruz pumped in 18 points for NBHS, which ended its season with a record of 10-12.
Toutle Lake 58, South Bend 26
The Fighting Ducks of Toutle Lake dismantled South Bend 58-26 last Thursday. Toutle took target practice while nailing 9-of-12 field-goal attempts in the second period, which included five treys to start the blowout.
After the game was tied at 8-8 in the first quarter TL went on to outscore SB 50-18. The Lady Tribe committed 26 turnovers.
“From where I sit, they’re the hottest team out there,” Coach Wilson told the Herald.
Katlyn Sawyer led SBHS in scoring with seven points and Russell grabbed seven rebounds.
“Overall, it was a very successful season, getting second place in the league and getting as far as we did in the tournament,” Wilson said in closing.
South Bend finished with a winning record of 12-11.
