Tales from the Lions Den

By DICK WOODS

April showers! Fishing opens! The grass needs cut. And flowers and shrubs are starting to bloom. The rhoadies are on the way. It’s time to work in the yard. Sometimes Lions get to work in their yard when Lions Projects don’t interfere.

This month we have to order fish to stock Case’s Pond. Then we have a work party to make sure the trail around the pond has gravel and is free of branches and fallen trees to make it safe for the annual Fishing Derby on Saturday, April 26th. Mike Runyan of Hawk's Superior Rock has agreed again to donate the gravel. The Pond is filled with fish from the Nisqually Hatchery, Forks Creek Hatchery and from the Naselle Hatchery. The winners in each age group receive prizes from Dennis Company. Bring your kids and grand-kids and let them catch a big one.

After the Fishing Derby, Lions get White Canes ready to give away on Saturday May 3rd, to make folks in the community aware of what the Lions do to support those who need help with sight problems. The donations made during White Cane Days raise money for Patient Care Grants to local Lions Clubs to assist people who need treatment for sight loss but cannot afford it and to children and adults who need help to regain their sight or maintain their independence.

Last year 120 Lions Clubs in Washington and Northern Idaho collected $148,970. So when you see the Lions at Everybody’s, take a White Cane and donate to help those with sight problems.

If you have a desire to get involved in your community as a Lion, ask any member of Lions on White Cane Day or we will see you at Case’s Pond.
