Police responded to a report of a stranded dolphin that had been injured but was alive, around 8pm on April 10. This species of dolphin was not usually seen in this area was beached to the south of Seaview.
Responders attempted to replace the dolphin back into the water, but the animal was too exhausted to swim. There were no appropriate agencies available to respond to the dolphin, and experts believed that it was too late for the dolphin.
There are currently 68,000 of this particular species of dolphin in the world. The Northern Right Dolphin is a social animal and travels in pack-like scenarios. The species still sometimes gets accidentally caught in gillnets and driftnets and are even intentionally hunted in Japan.
The specific dolphin in question was near five feet long, and weighed 90 pounds.
