Deer have ever so often presented a serious risk to motorist along most of western Washington roadways. Almost daily a deer is struck and results in serious vehicle damage. Just a few months ago a driver along SR 6 was involved in a non-injury accident after crashing by trying to avoid a deer outside Lebam.
Monday, May 13 at approximately 12:10 p.m. the Raymond Fire Department along with the Washington State Patrol, Pacific County Sheriff's Office and the Bay Center and Nemah Volunteer Fire Departments responded to a motorcycle accident on US 101 at milepost 44 near Bay Center.
According to the Washington State Patrol the motorcyclist 29-year old Daniel J. Funk of New Westminster, British Columbia was traveling northbound on US 101 on his 2000 Honda motorcycle. A deer abruptly jumped out onto the roadway and struck him. He was injured in the accident and transported to Willapa Harbor Hospital by the Raymond Fire Department. The extent of his injuries is unknown.
The cause of the accident was determined to be an encounter with wildlife and no charges are being filed as a result of the accident. No further details were available at the time of reporting.
