Wrecked car found abandoned near Toledo
Authorities are seeking the driver of an abandoned vehicle after an apparent collision near Toledo Dec. 30, according to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded to a 1991 Oldsmobile sedan in the ditch on the 5400 block of Jackson Hwy., north of Toledo, and found no indication of the identity or whereabouts of the driver.
It is estimated the vehicle crossed the center line and impacted the ditch, then spun around and came to rest with reportable damage, though no evidence was found to suggest the occupants were injured. Those with information about this collision are encouraged to contact authorities.
Snow leads to at least two area collisions
Snowy weather contributed to at least two local collisions Dec. 31, according to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office.
Just after 11 a.m., a 1989 Jeep Cherokee traveling north on the 1900 block of SR 603, north of Winlock, left the roadway and rolled into a tree, totaling the vehicle. The 65-year-old male driver, of Winlock, was uninjured but was cited for driving with expired license tags.
Just before 2 p.m., a 2004 Honda Civic lost control on the 4800 block of Jackson Hwy., north of Toledo, and landed in the ditch, totaling the vehicle. The 19-year-old male driver, of Toledo, was uninjured but was cited for driving too fast for conditions.
Fence, decorations damaged in crash
A Centralia man caused major property damage during a collision near Winlock Thursday, according to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office.
The 24-year-old driver a 2002 Chevrolet K-2 pickup was traveling on the 300 block of W. Avery Rd., north of Winlock, around 8 a.m. when he crossed the center line and struck a nearby fence and culvert, coming to rest in the tree line. No injuries were reported but a 20-foot section of fence was damaged as well as decorative items in the driveway.
The driver was cited for driving without insurance and for driving with wheels off the roadway.
Vader man strikes cow in Doty
Wandering livestock led to a violent collision in Doty for a Vader man Thursday, according to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office.
The collision, on the 200 block of Elk Creek Rd., occurred around 4 a.m. when the 60-year-old driver of a 1995 Chevrolet K-2 pickup crossed the center line to avoid hitting a cow on the shoulder. After passing the first, he struck a second cow in the road, causing major damage to the front of the vehicle and engine.
While the driver suffered no injuries, the cow had to be put down and the owner, who later removed the remains, was cited for animals at large.
Arrests and Referrals
Winlock men booked for drugs, warrant
Two Winlock men were arrested for major offences after a routine traffic stop Jan. 1, according to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office.
Daniel T. Shawgo, 24, and Barry W. Worley, 36, were booked after deputies pulled them over on the 1000 block of Kerron Ave. in Winlock. Shawgo was found to be driving with a suspended license and, during a search of the vehicle, deputies located three syringes, one containing a black substance later identified as heroine, and a spoon with burnt heroine residue.
Shawgo was booked into the Lewis County Jail for driving while license suspended, third degree, and possession of heroine. Worley was booked on a $25,000 warrant for failure to appear in connection with a charge of violation of a protection order.

Cooking hardware stolen from Toledo
Propane and propane accessories were the target of a burglary near Toledo last month, according to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office.
The 59-year-old female victim reported someone had broken into her garage on the 5500 block of Jackson Hwy., north of Toledo, sometime between Dec. 29 and 30. Stolen were a 20-gallon propane tank, a propane torch attachment and two glass plates, a total estimated loss of $110.
Residential burglary in Vader
Deputies responded to reports of a possible burglary in Vader Jan 1., according to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office.
The 68-year-old male victim stated someone had attempted to enter a house once belonging to his deceased father on the 800 block of E St. sometime between Dec. 31 and Jan. 1. Though no items have been identified as stolen, damage was reported to the outer front door of the house.
Metal thief caught in act, still at large
A Winlock woman remains at large after being caught clipping wires by a local property caretaker Jan. 2, according to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office.
Sarah J. Meyer, 26, was recognized by the caretaker of a property on the 100 block of N. Military Rd., east of Winlock, after he noticed wires had been cut from outbuildings. While searching the buildings, he located Meyer attempting to hide but, when law enforcement responded, she had fled the scene.
Meyer is being sought by authorities has been referred to the Lewis County Prosecutor’s Office for burglary, second degree, and malicious mischief, third degree.
Warrants and sentencing
Two sentences and one warrant were issued by Judge Steven Buzzard during municipal court in Winlock Thursday.
Becky D House, 45, of Puyallup, pleaded guilty to driving while license suspended, third degree, and was sentenced to 90 days in jail with 70 days suspended and the remainder to be served through electronic home monitoring. She was also fined $1,000 with $500 suspended.
Joshua A. Varner, 21, of Winlock, pleaded guilty to driving while license suspended, third degree, and was sentenced to 90 days in jail with 90 days suspended. He was also fined $800 with $400 suspended.
A $1,500 warrant was issued for the arrest of Patricia A. Heckman, 58, of Winlock, after failing to appear for her pre-trial hearing. Heckman is being charged with theft, third degree.
