Lions to honor long-serving members

The Winlock Lions Club will be honoring some of its longest-serving members in a special ceremony Thursday evening at the Winlock Community Building.

Scheduled for 6 p.m., the ceremony will feature recognition of 40-year member and long-time coordinator of the Winlock/Vader Food Bank Stan Taloff, as well as 50-year member and local optometrist Dr. C. Y. Wong.

Also on hand will be nine new inductees, with the event being presided over by Lions Club International District Governor Marilynn Danby. This event is open to the community and free to attend.

Second ‘Clean Up the Coop’ approaching

The Winlock Cleanup Committee is preparing to hold their second Clean Up the Coop event on March 8 at 10 a.m.

Intended to address projects un-accessible during last month’s snowy cleanup day, as well as new and ongoing projects, volunteers are asked to meet at the Lions Club Plaza on Kerron St. and can look forward to a complimentary lunch around noon.

Still needed are stiff brooms and roofing tools to help clean sidewalks, as well as pickups to help haul equipment and debris. A meeting will be taking place to plan the event Tuesday, Feb. 25, at the Winlock Christian Fellowship and those with questions can call Viola Chickese at (360) 785-0178.

Farmer’s market looking for vendors

The Community Farmers Market in Chehalis has announced its 10th Season in operation.  It will be open on Tuesdays, June 10 – Oct. 28 in its usual location in downtown Chehalis, on Boistfort Street.  

In preparation for the new season, the Farmers Market encourages potential vendors to apply for booth space.  Prepared food vendors are needed, but artisans, producers, and farmers are encouraged as well.

Vendor applications can be found at www.communityfarmersmarket.net under the Vendors tab, or hard copies can be picked up at the WSU Extension Office, 351 NW North St., in Chehalis. Anyone interested in becoming a vendor is encouraged to apply before the annual Community Farmers Market meeting, held March 27.

Read-aloud becomes sing-aloud at TRL

This year, Timberland Regional Library’s (TRL) annual Family Read-Aloud, becomes The Family Read & Sing Aloud, adding music as a major piece of the program.

Running from March 1 through April 12,  the program centers on families reading—and now singing—together in as many different areas of their homes as they can. The program focuses on children from infancy to grade 3, but all of a family’s children are encouraged to join.

Families, child care providers and classroom teachers who pick up “Read & Sing Aloud House” materials at any Timberland library beginning Saturday, March 1, may enter a drawing for prizes, including a backpack filled with books. Libraries will also have local drawings for books and other prizes. Complete Family Read & Sing Aloud program details will be in libraries and online at www.TRL.org by March 1.

Scheculed events: March 1, 2-3 p.m., Eric Ode Celebrates Children’s Books in Song, an interactive performance at the Winlock Library. March 1- April 5, Nursery Rhyme Scavenger Hunt, a new hunt each week. March 24-29, Sing to your Librarian Week: Celebrate singing! Children are invited to sing a nursery rhyme, short song, or the ABC song to a librarian during the week of March 24-29 to receive a small prize.

Evolution movie series hosted by Vader Lions

A series of free movie presentations debating difficult religious issues are scheduled to take place regularly now through May at the Vader Lions Hall.

Being held on Sundays from 2 to 4 p.m., these screenings are open to the public with no religious pressure, and refreshments will be provided. The schedule is as follows:

Feb . 23 – Evolution: The Grand Experiment – Pt 1

Mar. 9 – Evolution: The Grand Experiment – Pt 2 

Mar. 23 – The Privileged Planet

Mar. 30 – Our Created Solar System

Apr. 13 – Our Created Stars and Galaxies
