Castle Rock has honored outgoing Cadet Sgt. Mike Delzell for his years of participation in the city’s Cadet Program, as well as his outstanding character and attitude.
Presented with the Service Award during the March 24 Castle Rock City Council meeting, Delzell has been one of a number of young individuals involved in the Cadet Program, which allows those seeking careers in law enforcement to interact and train with officers within the department.
“They do every bit of training that we do,” said Police Chief Bob Heuer, stating the program serves as an opportunity to help students grow as officers as well as individuals. “It’s a mentoring program, as much as it is anything.”
Students from around the Castle Rock area are allowed to participate starting at age 16, and many, Heuer said, end up dedicating a number of years to the program, such as Delzell, who participated between 2008 and 2014. What Heuer said further sets Delzell apart has been the cadet’s positive interactions with community members and law enforcement.
“Everyone raved about his attitude and how courteous he was,” said Heuer.
When accepting the Service Award, Delzell said, “It’s definitely been a pleasure to work with such a great team,” adding, “I definitely believe the Cadet program has not only helped me, but the cadets under me.”
He credited the program with a recent promotion he obtained working asset protection for Wal Mart, and said he hopes it will reflect well on his application to become a full-time deputy with the Island County Sheriff’s Office.
Heuer said it is not unusual for participants to end up working for other agencies upon graduation, stating current dispatchers, coastguardsmen and department of corrections employees have gone through the program, as well.
