Inslee statement on COVID booster expanded eligibility

Gov. Jay Inslee issued a statement Saturday as the Western States Scientific Safety Review Workgroup confirmed actions taken by FDA and CDC to recommend boosters for all adults who received their initial course of COVID- 19 vaccine six or more months ago.

"The COVID vaccines continue to amaze me as a scientific success. The vaccine is the path out of the pandemic. I encourage everyone five years and older to get vaccinated - whether you are a child or adult getting their first vaccinate or a 50-year-old getting a booster, we can protect each other with this important step," Inslee said. "As we head into winter, we want to make sure to have as much protection against COVID as we can. We are seeing surging cases in other parts of the country, and we want to do what we can to prevent ourselves entering another COVID wave. Now that boosters are available to all adults, we hope everyone will take advantage of them. Protect yourself, your loved ones, your coworkers and your friends."

Support of High-Speed Rail Corridor with Oregon & B.C.

As part of the Cascadia Innovation Corridor Conference, Inslee along with Gov. Kate Brown and Premier John Horgan, signed a memorandum of understanding to establish ultra-high-speed transportation as a priority in the region. The action took place last Tuesday (Nov. 16).

"The Cascadia Innovation Corridor reflects our shared belief that regional challenges and opportunities require regional solutions," Inslee said. "We know that exchanging ideas and entrepreneurship across borders will build our economies and improve our quality of life in Washington state, British Columbia, and Oregon. We intend to do just that with the memorandum of understanding that we signed earlier today. We will coordinate with our partners on pursuing federal funding for high-speed rail and engage communities throughout our region."

The lore of Thanksgiving
The lore of Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is Thursday and many of us learned the story in school. The native Americans in this time helped the pilgrims with their harvest. Many pilgrims died before Thanksgiving, 102 lost their lives to disease and other illnesses. The remaining 52 pilgrims celebrated with the Wampanoag Tribe of Massachusetts.
The first Thanksgiving dinner was to celebrate the fall harvest. Celebrating the fall harvest was an English tradition and the pilgrims had much to celebrate in their new land.

Edward Winslow stated at the time about the feast of the day, "Our harvest being gotten in, our governor sent four men on fowling, that so we might after a special manner rejoice together, after we had gathered the fruits of our labors; they four in one day killed as much fowl, as with a little help beside, served the company almost a week, at which time amongst other recreations, we exercised our arms, many of the Indians coming amongst us, and amongst the rest their greatest king Massasoit...

Annual Derik Nissell Toy Drive gives kids a better Christmas

SOUTH BEND - The Sixth Annual Derik Nissell Toy Drive is in high gear for the 2021 Christmas season offering kids the joyous surprise of receiving a brand new toy. The drive is named in honor of Derik Nissell, who passed away at a young age in 2016. This wonderful drive for new toys is directed by Joyce Kidd and Susie Weisel-Webber.

"Derik hated the idea of any child being without a gift on Christmas morning," said Kidd, his mother. "Derik's co-workers spoke at his memorial service about his dedication to their company toy drive. That planted the seed and his family and friends took it from there."

Kidd complimented all those who help make the drive a successful one. "We could not provide this service without the generosity of our community. We are very blessed to have such wonderful friends and neighbors who help us in continuing to spread holiday cheer in memory of Derik.
