Inslee provides updates on public masking and masks in K-12 schools

Gov. Jay Inslee announced last Wednesday the state would maintain mandatory masking for K-12 students this fall. At a press conference in Olympia, Inslee also announced the state recommends Washingtonians wear masks in public indoor spaces in communities where there is substantial or high COVID spread, consistent with the latest CDC guidelines.

After months of decline in COVID activity, cases and hospitalizations are surging in Washington and around the country as states lift restrictions while the rate of vaccinations have slowed. According to the state Department of Health, 94 percent of COVID hospitalizations in Washington are currently among the unvaccinated.

At the same time, the more infectious delta variant of the virus is becoming the dominant strain around the country, including Washington state. COVID vaccinations are the safest and most effective way to prevent severe illness and infection from COVID.

Boss Hoggs BBQ and Catering hosts a great event this Saturday

Amy Smith, owner of Boss Hogg's BBQ in Winlock, has been helping to put Winlock on the map. With her sense of community and tasty food, she has brought many new people to Winlock to listen to live music or just to eat her famous BBQ. She is all about Winlock and Winlock is lucky to have her.

Amy was asked about why she chose Winlock, she stated, "Honestly, I didn't choose Winlock. Winlock kind of chose me, in a way. When I moved to Toledo in 2016, I was an insurance agent with American National Insurance and there were no office spaces for lease in town. I looked at a space in the Roundtree Building in Winlock and just fell in love with the town. So I moved my office from downtown Vancouver to Winlock in 2017. After a year, I bought Taylor's Landing and relocated my office to a little space up front, not knowing what I was going to utilize the building in its entirety. In 2019, my significant other and I started catering on the side and decided to jump through the hoops and put in a commissary kitchen and Boss Hogg's BBQ and Catering evolved.

Willapa Festival offers variety of fun for everyone

The annual Willapa Festival takes place Saturday (8:00 a.m.) and Sunday (9:00 a.m.) at a new location - the Riverfront Park in historic downtown Raymond. At press time, Monday morning, there were at least 20 vendors signed on for the festival. The musical entertainment is primarily local talent providing an array of styles.

Some of Saturday's prime events include the Classic Car Show (at the far end of the field), music from several bands, the co-ed softball tournament, a silent auction and bake sale, the beer garden, and much more.

The Willapa Festival is co-chaired by Michelle Layman of Willapa Printing, Jeff Karnatz of Alder + Co, and Chrystle Nordin of Pacific Seafood, and will share the venue with the Northwest Carriage Museum, Willapa Seaport Museum and the newly opened Alder + Co.

"In year's past, the park was used solely for the classic car show," Layman said. "This year the groups look forward to building their events together."
