If you have lived in the area for a while, then chances are you have been to Beesley's at the Toledo/Vader exit. Recently Dan and Dixie Beesley sold Beesley's to a local husband and wife team and they couldn't have left it in better hands.
Ron and Julie Zion took over July 1 and you can see it in their faces that they are happy to be there. Ron is a local boy he stated, "I have lived here all my life, eaten a bunch of burgers here, and decided it was a great opportunity. We wanted to carry on the long tradition of homestyle foods. We haven't changed anything, but we added chicken fried steak and we have specials." Julie continued, "We also have specials such as fresh peach shakes and halibut."
Every now and then you come across someone who has dedicated their time not just to their job, but to the community as well. That person to me is Paul Malarz. Paul is retiring from IGA Cedar Village on Friday after 38 years.
Paul was raised in Winlock since junior high. He graduated high school in 1975 and married his high school sweetheart Cindy Musgrove. Paul and Cindy briefly moved to Longview, but after a while, he wanted to go somewhere else, one of the big cities. Paul and Cindy changed their minds, "We soon realized, though, that Winlock was a great place to raise kids," stated Paul. So they moved back to Winlock. He had a few different jobs starting with the Winlock Family Market and the Jorgensen Veneer Plant. Then "Raleigh called me in August of 1980 to see if I was still looking for work and I said yes," continued Paul.
The first-ever girls' soccer match for the combined team from Raymond and South Bend high schools resulted in a historic win for the Riptide when they defeated visiting Ilwaco 2-1 after 80 minutes of play last Tuesday (Sept. 4) at the Raymond HS football field. It was also the inaugural soccer match for Ilwaco. Kyra Gardner, a ninth grader from RHS, scored both goals for the winners.
Monday, Sept. 10 at approximately 2:54 p.m. the South Bend Fire Department, Raymond Fire Department, South Bend Police, Raymond Police, and Washington State Patrol responded to a three vehicle accident at US 101 and Ferry St. in South Bend.
Local teachers and school districts have kept a close eye on other districts in the state that have ended up in courtrooms over teacher strikes. In a surprising chain of events a Tumwater judge ruled a Tumwater School District teacher strike to be illegal while another judge in Longview ordered Longview teachers back to work.
