Back-to-School safety tips

It's that time of year again, students are busy going back to school and everyone is trying to figure out their new schedules. As students return to school, we need to be concerned with all of our students safety.

We have put together a little safety information from you as we go into the new school year Safety tips include:

• Stop for any school bus that has its lights and "stop arm" activated to load and unload children. Drivers must stop in both directions, unless separated from the bus by a median.

Burglar of south county businesses in custody

A 32 year old Chehalis male is now in custody for a series of business burglaries plaguing southern Lewis County. Joint investigations involving the Lewis County Sheriff's Office and the Toledo and Winlock Police Departments culminated yesterday when investigators met with Joshua A. Duncan. Duncan had been arrested shortly after midnight on August 29 by the Chehalis Police Department during an in progress burglary to a church in the 600 block of NW St. Helens Ave, Chehalis.

Fir Street Bridge re-opens

It's hard to believe that after 5 years the Fir Street Bridge is finally open. It has been open for a few days but the celebration will be this Friday.

Locals come together to help community

Willapa Caring Hands is a brand new baby in Pacific County. This non-profit is forming in the hope of helping those in need. They will be hosting a free laundry day at the Raymond Laundromat on Sept. 9 to help local families get set for the new school year.

The group's main focus will be on families with kids in North Pacific County to help make sure they have the tools they need to be successful in school, but will also help out the rest of the community as much as possible.

South Bend Library temporarily closes; future uncertain

The South Bend branch of the Timberland Regional Library (TRL) has temporarily closed it doors and its staff relocated to the Raymond Library for the time being. Timberland Regional Library executives decided to close the library in an abundance of caution after several building concerns arose.

The Washington State Department of Labor and Industries was brought in at the request of Timberland Regional Library to look at several issues with the building. The final report is expected to be ready in the coming weeks. L&I has been looking at foundation supports, wall leakages, and several other structural concerns that have yet been specified.
