'Extra Help' Program Helps Seniors With Their Medication Costs

Dear Savvy Senior,

Are there any special Medicare programs that help seniors with their medication costs? My 74-year-old mother, who lives primarily on her Social Security, takes several high-priced drugs that sap her income even with her Medicare drug plan.

News from the LC Senior Board

The Lewis County Senior Board met on May 3, 2018 at the Twin City Senior Center. The meeting began with Winlock representatives asking for a copy of the prior Minutes and Agenda. President of the Board, Jim Henderson stated, "you don't need any." Eventually the Board provided the agenda. The minutes were approved thereafter but a copy of the minutes was never provided to the representatives.

The board then immediately went into Executive Session for 20 minutes. From conversation during the remaining meeting an assumption was made that in the Executive Session the board discussed the recent resignations of the Winlock representatives: Don Bradshaw, Vice President of the Board, and Louise Winder.

Lindsey Baum's remains found in Eastern Washington

"We've brought Lindsey home," Grays Harbor County Sheriff Rick Scott stated during a press conference on Thursday, May 10. "Sadly, she was not recovered as we and her family had hoped." Multiple-state and federal agencies from Washington, Idaho, and Montana are now searching the area where she was found hoping to find clues as to what happened. Her disappearance is being investigated as kidnapping and homicide.

Lindsey went missing from McCleary in 2009 after she left a friends house and was last known to be walking a few blocks to her home. That was the last time she was seen or heard from until her remains were found. Two hunters in Eastern Washington found human remains while hunting in September 2017, but because there was no crime associated with them at the time they weren't immediately sent to be tested for DNA by the FBI.

Vehicle fire in parking lot of Thriftway

Friday, May 11 at approximately 4:10 p.m. Raymond Fire and Raymond Police responded to report of a vehicle fire in the parking lot of Thriftway in Raymond. According to a scene report supplied by Raymond Fire Chief Todd Strozyk, upon arrival on scene fire crews discovered a red Toyota pickup with visible smoke and flames coming from under the hood.

Raymond Fire quickly cooled the vehicle and extinguished the fire that was discovered to be plastic and wiring burning near the vehicle's air intake and was confined to that area. The scene report also noted that the driver of the vehicle discovered it was on fire after returning from the store after shopping.

According to Raymond Police Chief Chuck Spoor the fire was extinguished quickly, but the vehicle did sustain severe damage. The owner of the vehicle was on scene and no injuries resulted from the fire.

No further details were available at the time of reporting.
